“Resort? Where?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

I have stayed in the hotel several times over the past 10 years or so and it seem everytime I go it get more disappointing. They bill themselves as a resort but it is not, it does seem to have a large conference senter but I have never been.
The location is fantastic...its on what I call the nice side of te lake. The hotel itself is in need of a remodel if not at least an update. I understand the economy in the Clearlake area has been hurt espicially since late january of 2009 and Im sure the revenue has great diminsihed at this place but that is not excuse for letting the pool area gstay so dirty and not do the general clean up around the hotel. If ya cant get an update at least do a clean up!

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the marina

I agree that our location is fantastic, and I also agree there is always more we can do. We have spent a significant amount of money over the last 5 years trying to maintain and improve our property. We celebrate 25 years of service this month, and in the last 2 years have redone our lobby area, lobby lounge, all our public restroom and about 25% of our meeting space. You are also correct, we do have a large conference center area, over 25,000 sq.ft. of space. With two ballrooms, an amphitheater and numerous smaller rooms the property has more meeting space than any other in the area. If the pool area was not as clean as it should have been on your recent stay, my apologies. We do have staff that are constantly working to keep it fresh, clean and picked up. Summer months are very busy, and together the pool staff and housekeeping staff work hard to keep it maintained. I hope on your next visit you experience a cleaner pool area and have the time to check out our great meeting and conference facility.

Ours was the first wedding the hotel hosted when it opened late 1988. They were still putting some finishing touches on the place, but did an excellent job with our reception. We stayed in the 2 story penthouse, and it was awesome with an east view of the very nice marina. We live within easy walking distance of the resort. Since then we have visited for Thanksgiving banquets, Sunday brunch and business conferences. Friends and family stay there often and enjoy the amenities that this fine property offers its guests. One friend comes in from Shreveport, LA every couple months on business. He has a generous expense account which permits him to stay anywhere he wants. He always chooses SSHR (sometimes he brings his wife, and she loves it even though she knows they could stay somewhere newer and more expensive).

So it's surprising that one reviewer said it doesn't have a resort feel?? With its magnificent pool & swim-up bar with live music, lush grounds, access to the impressive fitness center next door and golf course across the street, marina views (yes, it's best if you stay on upper floors that face east), free covered parking, short distances to Kemah Boardwalk, NASA and Galveston, gift shop, banquet areas & conference rooms, reasonable rates, shopping at quaint shops & farmer's markets nearby and an area renowned for great seafood--this property meets the criteria for being a resort, at least in my mind--even if the old girl is turning 25!

SSHR is a welcomed addition to our South Shore residential community.

Room Tip: Request upper floors facing east for best views of marina and Clear Lake.

South Shore Harbor in League City is probably one of my favorite places to visit. I live near Beaumont TX, so it is a short enough of a drive to go often, but has such an amazing RESORT feel to it that you feel like you are truly on vacation! A few girlfriends and I have made it our Girls Only weekend getaway! There have been times when we have checked in on Friday and not even left the hotel until check out Sunday. The staff is amazing and soooo accommodating! From the front desk/doormen who give you late check out to the maintenance and housekeeping staff who will bring you and extra blanket at 3am... they really go above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable in every way! The breakfast buffet is a food lover's dream! The inside bar serves up strong libations and appetizers. Now, let's talk about the pool. This pool is huge! Big enough so people who bring their kids stay on one end while the adults have access to the swim up bar where a DJ is spinning everything from country music to 70's and 80's, to today's pop favorites. (You can also order off a limited appetizer menu here as well) With it sitting right at the harbor, you can sit in the bar in the evening and watch the big yachts coming in while sipping on a glass of Pinot Grigio. I highly recommend SSH for your getaway!

Close to Everything and Far From it All. That was one of the advertising lines that was used by the City many years ago, and how true. We are centrally located to so many attractions in the Clear Lake Area with NASA/ JSC Space Center, Kemah, Tangier Factory Outlets and so much more. Our busy pool season is winding down, but we hopefully provided 1,000’s of guests a fun and relaxing weekend getaway this summer. Cheers to you for your kind remarks. Have a safe and enjoyable rest of the summer.

Resort is a vast exaggeration of this place. The location is great but that pretty much ends the good part. The room is old, and the balcony's overlook the conference center roof. The restaurant is by far the worse part of the experience. It's hard to mess up eggs ad bacon, but, alas. They burnt the eggs and the bacon was for viewing only. Ordered toast and got muffin, never got the coffee and I have no clue about the potatoes, or at least what day the grease originated.

Our rooms face East and West. Those that face West are overlooking a portion of the marina and a South Shore Harbour Resort subdivision. The rooms that face East have the view of the larger side of the Marina, the Fitness Center to the right, and does in fact look over the Conference Center roof. Rooms on the 5th floor or higher can see the Kemah Bridge, portions of the pool and the local neighborhood. I am guessing you were in a room on a lower floor, and your view was not as enjoyable. We usually receive great reviews on our breakfast buffet and restaurant service so I am concerned that you were not impressed. I do hope you mentioned something to our staff so we could have offered you an alternative. But it also sounds like you may have ordered Room Service, and we are looking into that order if we can determine the right guests/order/room etc. Regardless, you did not have a positive experience with your breakfast order and I am very sorry. Again, I hope you brought it to our staff’s attention so we could address your concerns.

My family and I had a great time at the resort, from the oment we walked in we were all welcomed with smiles from a fantastic staff who really went above and beyond for us. Our room was amazing, i recomend every one to stay in the penthouse suit at least once in their life. We had a great time at the pool, listening to a fun DJ while drinking our beverages at the bar, great atomsphere. I will be back as soon as I can!!

Room Tip: The Penthouse Suit!!!

I stayed at this hotel during the Labor Day weekend to celebrate my birthday with (3) of my girlfriends. We booked a room with (2) Queen beds and a balcony with a view of the bay. One of the rooms had a large private balcony and the other room had a small balcony without any privacy. The rooms were nice and clean with a small bathroom, and a separate dressing area right out side the bathroom, with a nice large mirror and several electrical plugs for curling irons and a hair dryer. There is also a big mirror in the bathroom and bedroom area with electrical plugs. The shower had plenty of hot water and good water pressure. The rooms have very dim lighting; therefore, it was not ideal for putting on makeup. The beds were not comfortable, the mattress felt like a box, but the pillows were nice and comfy. The hotel lobby is nice with a small lounge and a restaurant. The elevators were pretty fast. The pool area is very large and has a lot of lounge chairs and tables. They also have a nice swim up bar with a waterfall and they played great top 40 music, it was a very lively place. We were giving complementary breakfast vouchers with our stay and the food was very good. The buffet had scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and breakfast potato's. In addition, to a verity of hot and cold cereal, bread for toast, bagels and doughnuts. Also, included was coffee and orange juice. The cab service is somewhat limited or maybe it was because of the holiday weekend, but we had to wait (1) hour to and from our destination (there is no hotel car or shuttle bus to take guest around town). The staff in general was very nice and accommodating. Overall it was a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a private balcony.

Thank you for the great review and the details of your recent stay. I will be sure to pass on your kind remarks to the various departments that you mentioned in your critique. I am sorry that your mattress was not to your liking, as they were all changed out in 2009. I appreciate you taking your valuable time to share your thoughts with us and TripAdvisor. Have a safe and enjoyable rest of the summer.

we had a nice stay ...most off the staff is really nice...make sure you ask for a room 7th flloor and up...coffee maker in the room but after we finished our coffee we never got new coffee if you need a fridge in the room you need to pay for it :( ....beautiful balcony with view but nothing to sit on to enjoy the view :( The pool was this time very dirty with giant hairballs floating in it ....not so cool ...our towels got wet when it rained and when we ask for new towel they would give us only 3 new ones for the 5 off us ...not good ...the breakfast is nothing special ...the pictures of waffles for breakfast all over the hotel don't exist for the breakfast buffet .... I hope they work on the pool ...we want to come back ...

Room Tip: 7th floor and up ...and ask for a view over the bay ...beautiful sunsets

We had large crowds both on Saturday and Sunday for Labor Day Weekend and were nearly sold out both nights. This weekend is always a busy one for the hotel. We did have an extra cleaning shift added to our usual 3x a week, but with the crowds, almost impossible to keep the pool 100% debris free. I am sorry that one of the days you were down at the pool it was not as it should have been. We do not have a limit on pool towels, so not sure why you were only issues 3 when you needed 5, but I will certainly address that concern. You are correct about the waffles. We have a generic picture of a buffet in our guest elevators that has a small waffle on it. It is certainly not our intention to mislead anyone, we are in the process of having a new sign done, and hopefully in place by the end of the month. I am glad you are wanting to come back and we look forward to you enjoying another relaxing visit. Thank you for your comments and feedback.
