“Good Times at Roddy Tree”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2011

My family and I had a wonderful time at Roddy Tree. I wish we had another couple of days to enjoy all the extras. The homes were cozy and clean and I loved having everything we needed there and not having to pack everything. My 3 year old and 9 year old had a great time swimming, canoeing, and just walking around. I brought my sons bike and he loved riding around visiting our other family members. The rec room was awesome after supper to play ping pong and fuzz ball. Can't say enough good things about the place. Really want to go back soon!

Room Tip: If going with a large group look at map and pick houses that are close.

Thanks for coming back. That was our goal when we started the Ranch in 1995. At the time we had two boys 5 & 3. We wanted to have a place that families could enjoy, everyone in the family. If you have suggestions or a wish list for Roddy Tree, please pass it on. It will be good to have you back soon. Keith

We stayed for a week. No room service to clean or straighten up. Felt like bugs were crawling all over me while in bed. We would have left, but would have forfeited prepaid fees.

A notice on a lamp stated 'not to remove or tamper with lamp..insurance carrier required lamp to be functional.' Note stated there would be a large charge to the guest if the lamp was tampered with. The lamp did not have a bulb, nor was it plugged into an outlet. So much for the insurance, questioned if there was any insurance in the event of a need.

We experienced a similar welcome as another guest, found keys and maps in a box. We arrived late PM, no one around.

Our overall rating would have gone from territory to bad if there had been any attention to detal. !!!

Person who identified himself as the owner stated he could not afford to hire anyone to clean units ..

Best advice: stay AWAY. !!!

Even if you have to pay a little more somewhere else, the other place would be a real bargain.

I will address each point in this review. First of all we are not a hotel. We do not offer cleaning services on a daily basis. If this person wanted room service daily they should have stayed in a hotel. The comment about the lamp kind of tells it all. These are tags that are by law placed on all lamps and have nothing to do with our insurance. Our office is open till 6 pm for check-ins, late arrivals are left a package with directions to their cabin, key and other important information. There is an after hour number on the door. I can be reached 24 hour a day 7 days a week. I am the owner and have never told anyone that we can't afford to hire folks to clean the units. We have a wonderful cleaning staff that do a terrific job. You can't please all the people all the time. Some you can't please at all.

This is a beautiful ranch that needs a little attention to detail. It has such a variety of things for the children to do--fishing pond, pools, etc.. We probably won't stay again, though, because our cabin just wasn't as clean as we're used to. The sheets and towels were clean, but the furniture and dining chair seat cushions were badly stained and the window sills and light switches were dirty. The ranch also needs to update its Web site and room materials. There is no petting zoo (just horses and burros) and there is no paddle boat (just canoes) at the river. There is plenty to do, so why not be honest about what's available?

Room Tip: We like the cabins overlooking the fishing pond.

While I'm glad that your children had a wonderful time with us, I'm sorry to hear that you were a bit disappointed last summer. While staying in one of our cabins is certainly a different experience than a night at an average hotel, we take pride in our cleanliness and appearance. I will discuss your feedback with our cleaning staff to make sure that they're staying as diligent as usual. Still, I apologize for your experience. Thank you for your honest feedback — it is what makes us strive to do better! We hope you'll give us another try soon.

Staff/Management we encountered were very nice and fine...The property was cozy and relaxing...Sat. evening entertainment was wonderful. The pools were clean and nice! Our cabin was cozy and rustic....HOWEVER we did not sit on the living room furniture without blankets on top because they were dirty. The sofa had very large and visible stains all over. Not appealing in the slightest...who knows what they are from, vomit, food...?????? The comforter in the bedroom was clean HOWEVER it did have obvious stains. The throw carpets in both rooms felt very dirty...they need to be cleaned, washed, or thrown out. We did not walk on bare feet in the cabin because it felt gross. We had a short stay and decided not to complain about those issues...we've settled on looking for another Hill Country getaway when we head out of town again. Too bad because with a little more attention to details this place would of been perfect.

This was our third annual trip to Roddy Tree for Spring Break and it was looking good! The pools were spotless and clear; although it was a bit chilly, several families were swimming. The basketball court - a big draw for my boys - was clean as usual, and they got new basketballs, which was nice. Our cabin was clean and welcoming, with plenty of clean towels and blankets for a couple of chilly nights. We canoed on the Guadalupe River, visited the horses & donkeys, and had a generally wonderful time of family fun. This place isn't for everybody - the staff is kind of hands-off and out of the way, but we've found this place to be super for relaxing and re-connecting as a family. Looking forward to many years of return trips!

I told the receptionist at Roddy Tree Ranch that we would be driving in from Dallas and would be arriving late. When we got there, a key was in the box along with a map that was so old and worn out that it was illegble. The cabins are stread out over the ranch and there are no road markings. I was reduced to stopping at a cabin with the lights on and knocking on the door at 11:00 at night.... not a very comfortable thing to do.

After getting instructions, I located my cabin and guess what.... it wasn't a cabin at all but a mobile home with a built on front porch. 400 sq ft max!

The employees were nice but painfully unable to help. I never met the owners in the three days that I was there.

There are many very nice retreats in the hill country. I wouldn't include Roddy Tree Ranch among them!

I'm so sorry to hear about this. While our office does close at 6, we should have made sure that the map we provided was more legible for you to read at night. Furthermore, I'm sorry that you were not impressed with your accommodations. I feel that there was some miscommunication upon reserving your room. I apologize for your experience, and I hope that you'll give us another try soon.

The people who run the place are nice, but it needs a lot of repairs and updates. The pools were unclean and not usable. Everything in the game room was broken. Mice in our house. Major road noise if you are in a place by Rte 39. They say no pets, but there are people living in there who have dogs, plus the owner lets friends stay with dogs. Several nights we could not sleep for all the dog howling. Multiple things advertised on the web site do not exist.

On the plus side, the Saturday night live music was terrific.

I'm sorry these folks had so much to complain about. Some of their concerns are valid. We do have some issues with pools from time to time, but address them as fast as possible however, at no time were both pool areas not usable. Mice in the country, when it starts getting cooler, our county mice look for warmer places to live and food. As soon as they appear we take proper steps to eradicate the problem. We inspect our facilities often and correct problem as they arise or as hey are reported to us. Most people have a wonderful time here and come back year after year. Some focus on the negatives.
