“Highway view is better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2012

We actually stopped at this in July 2010, but we have driven by him many times. The best part about getting up close were the plaques at the base of the statue. Unless you really want to have some pictures of you with the man, then keep on driving.

“A Big Statue for a Big Man”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2012

The best thing about stopping to visit the huge statue, apart from taking a good look up close, is the opportunity to learn a bit about this giant of a man in Texas and U.S. history. Sam Houston is honored in Huntsville because he made his home there at the time of his death in 1863. He would have nothing to do with the Confederacy, so he resigned as Governor of Texas after the vote to secede from the Union and retired to Huntsville. It's a short pleasant walk though the woods from the visitor center to the statue. Admission is free.

“It's big. Don't bother, just slow down on the highway and have a look.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2012

It's just a big concrete statue. Don't bother. You see it from the highway. The little shop attached to it is tiny.

“Hello Houston! Sam, that is!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2012

You pass him- and say you're going to stop next time... before you know it- a year has gone by! :-) A visit (an actual stop) to the statue is well worth the exit off the highway! A quaint little gift shop/museum with bathroom facilities and snacks welcome you... along with super nice staff and very knowledgeable of the history and whole area surrounding statue and Huntsville. Stroll out to visit the big guy and you wont be disappointed. Ever wonder what's on the backside? You'll have to find out for yourself! Totally recommend for: All native Texans (I'm from NY) and newbie's like myself! Great for kids- history buffs or leg stretchers on a long trip! ENJOY! (Spring is the best time to enjoy the wildflowers along the Hwy and in front of Sam)

“Worth getting off the highway to see up close!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2011

Sam Houston Statue is humungus! Quite impressive from the road, but even more impressive to drive to the little gift shop and follow the trail to see Sam up close and personal. We were glad we stopped. It was an adventure.
