We generally stay near The Houston Galleria, but a family member was staying in the nearby West Houston Medical Center soThe Westchase Hilton seemed like the best choice.
The shiny, contemporary 13 story hotel is set amongst strip malls, apartment buildings, restaurants and shops. Near the lobby is a giant, dimly lit sunken lounge area with plenty of room to sit, chat and/or wait. There is a piano, but no one was playing it at 8:00 on a Saturday night. The check-in staff were friendly and laughed when my husband joked that we were checking in for the “power lifting” convention (we weren’t) going on at the hotel. There was definitely a convention/business feel to the place.
We’re Hilton Honors members, so as usual we were given a room on a high floor. There were two floor-to-ceiling windows at a 45 degree angle to each other with a nice view of sprawling Houston. The “serenity” beds were extremely comfortable and my husband remarked over and over how much he loved the hotel bed. The hotel had an easy to use alarm clock, bedside lamps with handy dimmer switches, coffee pot, iron, bathrobe and all the usual accoutrements you expect. Oddly enough, the mini bar was completely empty. We weren’t planning on using it, but we did find it strange that it was not stocked.
The bathroom, which was stocked with all kinds of Crabtree & Evelyn products was kind of small, but the bathtub was nice and the shower had good water pressure and plenty of hot. There was a hair dryer, but there was not a magnifying-make up mirror, which I’ve come to enjoy at hotels.
The hotel is attached to a Rio Ranch steakhouse, but it’s also next door to an Outback. Other restaurants next door included an Indian place and both an Italian and Mexican place – all very family friendly. It was nice not having to drive to dinner. We went back to go to sleep in what was an extremely QUIET room.
The next morning, my daughter and I walked downstairs to take a look at the pool. It had rained the previous evening and the pool looked rather dirty. There were half-full wine glasses left sitting on the patio tables, which seemed extremely tacky. But it was Palm Sunday, and based on how clean the hotel had been the day before, I’m thinking maybe they were a little short staffed at the moment and housekeeping just hadn’t quite made it out to the pool? The weather wasn’t ripe for swimming anyway.
Given the location and the price, I would stay here again if I were visiting family in that area. It's not very near any of the main tourist attractions (Galleria, Zoo, Museums) but it is nice.
