I was nervous about my stay here after reading the reviews. While there were things that could've been better, we had a pretty decent overall stay. We didn't choose this hotel. My husband was attending a conference that was held at the hotel.

I did not find the room to be abnormally small. The bathroom was smaller than most, but they made good use of the space. My biggest complaint would be the water. We were there five nights and the water pressure and temperature in the shower changed dramatically during our showers. By the last couple of days, the situation was better, so maybe it was an isolated incident.

It was freezing in the room when we got there even though it wasn't cold outside. We adjusted the thermostat and left for a couple of hours. It was still cold, and they brought us a nice portable heater.

The beds were really nice. The mattresses were TempurPedic and the comforters were white. I love white comforters! It shows they're not trying to hide anything. Wake up calls were always prompt.

There is a small park behind the hotel that is well maintained and a good spot to relax while enjoying the sunshine.

Parking was valet only and expensive, but I think that's pretty typical at most downtown hotels in large cities.

Previous reviews criticized for lack of dining. There were a few restaurants withing walking distance, but the hotel also has easy interstate access as well as tunnel access for fast food options.

My husband attended a convention in Houston and we stayed at the Crowne Plaza Houston Downtown. The room was incredibly small, but efficient. We liked the way the space was used in the (small) bathroom, but almost killed ourselves in the slippery bathtub without a mat. The breakfast buffet, while plentiful, was lukewarm. One morning we sat out by the pool to read the papers, but were driven inside by the noise from the highway right next to the hotel. The best compliment we can give this property was the courtesy driver available for the downtown area -- that is a terrific service! But other than that ... and the friendly bartender ... the hotel does not warrant the rates it charges.

We stayed here after bidding $40 a night. I was so excited but was soon disappointed. The rooms were so tiny and we had three little ones. The parking is totally valet, there's no good restaurants near by and local calls are $.50 (what a joke). The staff was unhelfpul and ignored us much of the time. The pool was outisde, and in Houston that means you'll never get to use it. It felt like the Holiday Inn with a superiority complex.

Our family stayed here for a weekend getaway. The hotel was very busy, with two wedding receptions taking place. In spite of this, the staff was extremely attentive and helpful. Our rooms were spacious and clean, and everything was in good repair. While the lobby decor does have something of a early 1970's feel, it is spotless and well-maintained.
The lobby decor lends something reassuring -- it reminds you of a Houston that doesn't exist anymore, the place where Judge Hofheinz built the Astrodome, and folks spent New Year's Eve at the Shamrock Hotel, and Leon Hale wrote for the Post, and the Astros had those crazy stripes across their bellies. A nice, clean, and pleasant hotel. We'll stay again.

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Houston downtown after bidding at Priceline $ 80 for a weekday room at a downtown hotel. That seemed to be a great deal, compared to their rack rate of $ 249, but we felt that even our price was still too high for a hotel that seem to be running on its last legs. Some of the staff members (front desk and housekeeping) were helpful and efficient with special requests like a bathrobe or extra pillows, but the overall impression isn´t a favorable one. The rooms facing Smith street tend to be very noisy (heavy bus traffic), and the "renovation" the hotel claims to have done in 2001 (see their website) does not show at all. The aircon in the lobby was very bad, it was extremly humid inside. The room: stained furniture, very low quality linens, bedspreads and pillows. The aircon unit in our room on the 5. floor was extrem dirty (filter AND outlet duct), and the "nonsmoking" room smelled smoky. In the tiny bathroom, the ceiling showed bubbles (mold?). The seating furniture was heavily stained. We tried room service once (mediocre sandwiches), and the server tried to play a common game on us: The receipt we signed in the room did not show extras charges for room service gratuity AND delivery that were later added, but had a line open for a tip. We asked the server whether there would be any additional charges for delivery, and he caimed no!
This way, they obviously try to secure a tip twice, or the hotel management just pockets the "official" gratuity added later. One morning, we tried their breakfast restaurant, and that was a very bad idea. The server was as friendly as a drill sergeant at a US marines boot camp and did not enjoy her work at all. We did not take the unimpressive $ 9.90 buffet, but both ordered an omelette a la carte, and two hours after finishing the dish we both began to have serious belly cramps, followed by day long diarrhea! I guess it would be a great idea to send the local food inspector into their kitchen.

Overall, a terrible experience in a run-down place that is not located too convenient in the downtown area. To go to the convention centre or the fine arts museum, you definitely need a cab. Next time, we will gladly pay more, but avoid the Crowne Plaza at all costs.
