This has become a terrible place. My wife and I stayed at the Lancaster five years ago and had a great room. This time was were stuck in a nasty, old, and tiny room. When we voiced our displeasure to the staff, they did not care a bit and in fact said this is what you get if you book over the internet. They blatantly lied to us about other rooms and availability. After two hours of unhappy discussions we finally moved to a better room that was still not high quality. I wrote a letter to the company expressing my displeasure and received a reply that essentially said sorry for the trouble, we are experiencing some changes and if you return in a few months you will like us. There was no offer of a discount or courtesy or anything to show the slightest concern. No way we ever stay there again.

I love to go to Houston when ever possible. The city is fun and exciting especially downtown. I stay at many different hotels and I love the little ones that are independant and hidden. These are usually the jewels of the city and the service is much much more personal. I found the Lancaster and I knew it was a historic place but never stayed until now! I had theatre tickets downtown and wanted to be close, the less driving in Houston the better. When I got there the sheer elegance and feel of the place was remarkable. I loved my room and really got a great night sleep. The theatre combined with the Night life of Houston and a great little jewel of a place made the stay wonderful. I will come back and stay there again.

My wife and I have been coming to the Lancaster for many years (probably about seven or eight). I have oil business matters and my wife loves the opera, so it works for both of us due its great location. We have traveled all over the world and had always considered The Lancaster equal to some of the best hotels in the world. The service was always polished, ample, friendly, comfortable and warm. The decor and ambiance is distinctly European and very teasteful. In our opinion, it was a class act through and through without being arrogant or tilted. But the last two times we've stayed there recently have been extremely dissapointing. Since we considered The Lancaster our "home" in Houston, we felt personally let down. Specifically, our room had two light bulbs burnt out, the "old" tv didn't work (after FOUR calls finally someone changed the remote three hours later), the reception persons never smiled and were nearly rude, we were given a key for a different room and had to come down to wait for them to "make" a new key!, there was no bellman helping us with our luggage, the elevator was filthy and smelled of urine, the employees were curt and rushed, and our food was so-so and cold (room service had to be called three times to bring our complete order). But no one seemed to care one way or the other. We have had a smiliar (but not as bad) experience in February, but we just assumed it was an off day. But this time it was worse and the last time we'll return unfortunately. We don't ususally complain or want much fuzz, but after we left (we had to wait 45 minutes for our car even though we had called for it 30 minutes before! and again, no apologies or explanations) so we have decided to try one of the other hotels in the area next time. We'll never return.

My husband and I went to celebrate his birthday and had a wonderful time. When we arrived we found chilled champagne and chocolate covered strawberries waiting for us, with romantic music softly playing in the background. The bed was turned down and the robes were laid out waiting for us. The only thing they had not done was draw a bubble bath. It was wonderful! The entire staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We had no complaints and can't wait to go again!

My husband and I were recently stunned after reading so many "rave" reviews on various travel websites about how fabulous the Lancaster is. The hotel was absolutely dreadful! Quaint, yes but absolutely filthy! Our "king" room was the smallest hotel room I have every stayed in and the upholstry on the furniture was stained, faded and ripped. There were handprints everywhere on the walls and the carpet was disgusting. If it were not for having a sick child with us, we would have left immediately. The staff was very nice I do have to say but cleanliness of the hotel would turn anyone's stomach, the bathroom was the worst, I saw that a previous poster mentioned it as well. The tub looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. Yuk! I find it VERY interesting and suspicious that there are so many "5" star reviews all over the internet for this hotel because I would hardly give it a "2"! Beware!
