My wife and I have been coming to the Lancaster for many years (probably about seven or eight). I have oil business matters and my wife loves the opera, so it works for both of us due its great location. We have traveled all over the world and had always considered The Lancaster equal to some of the best hotels in the world. The service was always polished, ample, friendly, comfortable and warm. The decor and ambiance is distinctly European and very teasteful. In our opinion, it was a class act through and through without being arrogant or tilted. But the last two times we've stayed there recently have been extremely dissapointing. Since we considered The Lancaster our "home" in Houston, we felt personally let down. Specifically, our room had two light bulbs burnt out, the "old" tv didn't work (after FOUR calls finally someone changed the remote three hours later), the reception persons never smiled and were nearly rude, we were given a key for a different room and had to come down to wait for them to "make" a new key!, there was no bellman helping us with our luggage, the elevator was filthy and smelled of urine, the employees were curt and rushed, and our food was so-so and cold (room service had to be called three times to bring our complete order). But no one seemed to care one way or the other. We have had a smiliar (but not as bad) experience in February, but we just assumed it was an off day. But this time it was worse and the last time we'll return unfortunately. We don't ususally complain or want much fuzz, but after we left (we had to wait 45 minutes for our car even though we had called for it 30 minutes before! and again, no apologies or explanations) so we have decided to try one of the other hotels in the area next time. We'll never return.
