My husband and I were recently stunned after reading so many "rave" reviews on various travel websites about how fabulous the Lancaster is. The hotel was absolutely dreadful! Quaint, yes but absolutely filthy! Our "king" room was the smallest hotel room I have every stayed in and the upholstry on the furniture was stained, faded and ripped. There were handprints everywhere on the walls and the carpet was disgusting. If it were not for having a sick child with us, we would have left immediately. The staff was very nice I do have to say but cleanliness of the hotel would turn anyone's stomach, the bathroom was the worst, I saw that a previous poster mentioned it as well. The tub looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. Yuk! I find it VERY interesting and suspicious that there are so many "5" star reviews all over the internet for this hotel because I would hardly give it a "2"! Beware!

I travel to downtown Houston for business on a regular basis and have tried a few of the hotels - the Lancaster and Magnolia are particularily close to our Houston office, so I've stayed at both and the Doubletree downtown. I would say the service at the Lancaster was great - they took us to the airport in their car service, etc. Can't vouch for the food as we didn't eat there. However, the rooms, though they had a bit more personality than the Doubletree or the Magnolia, felt quite dated. I had a light in the room that did not work, the room was small and felt a bit stuffy. Additionally, cleanliness was an issue in the bathroom (also small) as there was hair and whiskers left in the sink and some discoloring of the white marble around the faucet. It was right after the hurricane in Houston so the place was still packed, which may have accounted for some of the issues. Overall, I prefer the personality of the Magnolia as its a bit more modern, and also prefer the Doubletree because of the consistency, quality of beds and Hilton points.

We arrived to an unsmiling non verbal reception desk. Once up in the room we found that their version of a King room would befitting for a pygmy king. A very small room with not a drawer to put things. The wall next to the door had finger prints on it as did the door they remained our time in this room. The upholstered chair and ottoman we both stained badly and did not make one want to sit. The bathroom and closet set up is equal to a Laurel and Hardy skit in its use. The key in the bar got stuck and the door had to be replaced. The overall condition of the hotel is tired. Other than the original two reception desk folks, everyone was very nice and helpful. Eating breakfast in the restaurant was ok if one did not mind bad service, friendly but bad. If I am ever forced to go to Texas again I do not think I would stay here.

I didn't want to be in a big, crowded hotel. I took a risk going with a brand name I did not recognize and was glad I did. A lovely, quaint hotel in downtown Houston. The staff was friendly, they have a nice cozy restuarant, and the room was quite comfortable. Expensive valet parking, but worth the comfort and luxury. If I needed to stay in downtown Houston, this is where I'd stay.

Very nice hotel, the staff is excellent. They go out of their way to provide anything you may want. The room were a bit small, but very tastefully decorated. The bar was great & food is fantastic. The hotel may lack some of the amenities of much larger ones, but it makes up for it with world class service.
