Given the crazy weather start to 2014, I've had two separate opportunities to stay at the Marriott IAH over the past two months. Both were "last minute" bookings when flights were canceled or connections missed.
The first time I stayed here was in January 2014. I arrived just in time to catch a quick snack at the upstairs restaurant. The bar area was rather small, but thankfully someone had just left so I grabbed a seat and ordered some hot wings. Taste was good. Just didn't feel like an exciting "Champions" kind of place you find at other Marriott properties.
When I checked-in I had asked at what time the concierge lounge was open for breakfast, and was told 10 AM. I even asked to double check, but was assured it was 10 AM. As my rescheduled flight wasn't until 2:45 PM, I was planning a leisurely morning.
I stopped into the lounge at 9:30 and everything was packed up. The lounge staff didn't offer any suggestions, just said "maybe we can find a cereal?"
I went back to the room with a cup of coffee, and to call the front desk to request a late checkout of 1 PM, which was granted. I mentioned in passing that I was given the wrong information about the lounge; the woman was apologetic and offered a pass to Allie's for breakfast. That was appreciated. I hit the tail end so couldn't do the buffet as they were packing it up right at 10, but ordered of the menu. Service was decent and my coffee stayed full.
Rooms as noted by others are a bit dated, as is the hotel in general. The hotel overall definitely needs a refresh.
However, you're probably not staying there unless you need the convenience, which you can't beat. Price was a bit high but I can't overly complain with last minute booking. Captive audience.
When I'm stuck in IAH again (and I know I will be), I'll try and snag a room here.
