“Really Large Suite Rooms and good for long stays”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

The hotel has really large rooms that are excellent if on a long trip as you get a lot of space; plus its super close to shops and restaurants which makes it convenient. The hotel is rather busy on weekends and especially during the summer, but the rest of the time it's fairly quiet. Has all the facilities needed in a hotel of its standard and the staff are helpful and friendly.

This hotel is located just down the street from the galaria mall and close to dozens of other shops and restaurants. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Checking in was simple and our bags were quickly taken to our room. By far the best thing about this hotel is the staff. On the other hand, the hotel could use some major upgrades and a good cleaning. The hallways all smelled very bad. Our first room also had a bad smell. Thankfully the front desk upgraded us to another room. Although we did not use the kitchen in our suit, the oven and frig appeared to be 2 decades old. With all the choices of hotels in the area we will likely look for another place in the future.

As Hilton honors member, I like to stay in the Hilton Family hotels unless Omni like Corpus Christi really entices you with their Republic of Texas on top floor. Very busy during summer as our grandson was to arrive, we did not have time to shop for our daughter for grandson's arrival. We did have to buy something that was not on her registry, that was thoughtful and small since her registry took precedence. What other place to go and live in Galleria and let your wife go shopping while availing all priveleges of Double Tree hospitality suite for HHONORS members. This hotel had the best fresh fruit, name brand wines and beers and excellent service next to none both in the evening before dinner and in the morning at break fast that my wife missed because we had sumptous dinner in the evening. Since we did not have to drive for dinner, one of us did not have to be designated driver, so we could finish whole bottle of wine between just two of us.
Best thing about Double Tree was not just its big suite, fully furnished kitchen that we did not touch except for refrigerator and prompt vallet service, check in and in room luncheon for my wife on Monday morning when I was at meetings. So if you have Friday and Monday to work in Houston and you want to shop, mix the pleasure and stay at Double Tree, you will enjoy it. Great service and really double the best experience better than going to Europe, if you have to be lazy and enjoy this is the place with over 40 sit in top class restaurants in walking distance, be it for Steak, Sea Food, Indian, Mediterranean or Italian, we enjoyed all five from Friday evening to Sunday night. Try you will love Double Tree. Clean, best service, reght temperatures for all (we set our room at 68 F) and great HHonors lounge for breakfast and Hors d hours reception. We enjoyed it and will do so next chance we get, may be before Christmas

Room Tip: I always ask for highest floor and away from Elevators or vending machine since I am a light sleeper...

Lobby was deceiving. The hotel looks good until stepping into the elevator and heading up to the room. The hallways and outside of the room were in desperate need of an upgrade. The carpets were worn, thin, old, and had stains on it throughout. I thought, "Well maybe the inside isn't as bad." Nope, it was worse. The inside smelled of mildew, which was incredibly overwhelming. The wall paper was peeling from the walls, the bathroom counter had such hard water stains that it looked dirty, and the room throughout had no consistency of decoration or design. The room had obviously not been upgraded. Although the room was a suite, it smelled so bad that it wasn't worth staying. Also, the mattress was so rough and had no cushion to it. Lastly, upon turning on the TV, I found that none of the channels worked. A call to the front desk had a "technician" come out and figure that the plug had been removed.

I could no longer stand the smell and had to check out. I called the Embassy Suites across the street, and they saved me. And they were cheaper!

Final words: Do not stay here.

Thank you for your review of your recent visit to the hotel. This is certainly not the experience we want our guests to have upon arriving at the hotel. You comments have been shared with the Housekeeping and Engineering managers to correct these issues immediately.

The hotel is scheduled to begin renovations before the end of the year that upgrade the hallway carpets and lighting, kitchen appliances and bathroom fixtures.

We sincerely apologize for the experience you encounterd. This is not a standard experience. We do look forward to having you return as our guest to see the upcoming improvements.

Very nice welcome from the valet parking guys, who remained gracious even when I said I did not want their services. And delightful reception from Autumn at the front desk - beautiful manners, and very efficient. The let-down was the grim decor and lighting in the suite - reminded me of visiting Soviet Union in the 1980s and the room (# 701) was dirty. For example, the phone was greasy, with pieces of dark hair stuck to it, and generally the whole suite felt grungy and uninviting. And very spartan - the safe stuck on a little pedestal would have been better concealed somewhere, and the bedroom felt as tho' someone had stolen a couple of furniture items ... very odd. Not on my list of places to revisit.

Changed over from a hotel nearby looking for a extended stay hotel with larger rooms. Stayed a total of 22 nights. The suites are HUGE - pretty much the size of a small apartment. The mattress and pillows were very comfortable. The internet was super-fast by hotel standards. Will I be staying here again? Not unless the hotel receives a much needed renovation. The rooms are showing its age and the air conditioners are noisy. The kitchenettes in the suites have antique appliances. Mine also had no cutlery, or pots and pans - somewhat defying having a stove over there.

The staff were always VERY helpful and friendly - one can see they are trained by a well-established hotel chain.

I have stayed there in double tree several times. The hotel is very central, located next to galleria. The suites that you get are huge, enormously large. You absolutely have more than what you need in terms of lodging. The room interiors are not very contemporary. It feels like they have not done any renovating since ages. The beds are sometimes way too soft for my taste. I like to sleep on firm mattresses. Other than that the breakfast is decent. Not too much of selections but still tasty. There is a swimming pool and a hot tub. The gym is small but functional. I would strongly recommend staying there. Do not forget to tip the guys in the breakfast hall, they can be very ignoring :)

Room Tip: both sides are ok, I stayed on both of the sides, no advantage or disadvantage. Facing the swimming...

Thank you for your recent review. Your kind comments have been shared with the management team and their staff.

I have also shared your breakfast comments with the Food & Beverage Director. This is certainly not the standard service of McKinley's. Please accept our apologies and know that this issue is being corrected.
