Just one word for this place ..sexy. The design is over the top high style. Every few inches there is some sort of visual entertainment. There are enough deluxe construction materials, fabrics and patterns to induce vertigo, but the cumulative effect is stimulating, and endearing; unlike, say for example, the Delano in South Beach which can seem aloof and condescending. We stayed for a night in the SoHo Loft- one sexy hotel suite. So huge you could throw an office party in there. All of the furnishings, flooring, architectural hardware, black honed marble, black belting leather etc. are not simply attractive they are of the highest quality. At night the “apartment” comes into its own with dark ceilings and halogen pin spots complementing the lights of the sweeping, expansive eleventh floor cityscape. (though the view is better in the rooms facing south to Hermann Park) Put in a cd or dvd below the 60” plasma or use the Bose ipod docks, fill up that huge tub for two and ...well, you get the idea.
The mature oak trees and nearby museums makes it feel like the grand hotels along Central Park in New York. Across the street is the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and several blocks away are two stunning and sensational treasures -the Menil Collection Museum designed by Rienzo Piano and the adjacent Rothko Chapel. If you get museum fatigue you can in the River Oaks and Galleria areas within ten minutes by simply calling for the driver to bring you in the Zaza’s Escalade. Nice. (we had virtually zero wait.)
The staff was great. Flawless- from Lolita in reservations to Ralph at the time of check out. I had a luggage problem and I must have received six calls updating me until it was solved. It seems like they have all just graduated from hotel management and their careers are on the line with youthful enthusiasm to get things just right. The mood of service is professional yet collegial – not subservient. The Monarch restaurant was not terribly crowded, good drinks and we saw a well known NBA star. The menu in the Monarch restaurant was imaginative with the usual eclecticism you see now days and perfectly presented. We had a very enjoyable meal, and an expert waitress, but for me the taste wasn’t quite there –I don’t know, likely too many of those superb martinis.
The Hotel Zaza in Houston…it’s great foreplay.
