I just spent the weekend at the Hotel Zaza, Houston. What a fun place to stay!
I was promptly welcomed by the friendly valet parking staff and porters and didn't have to wait at the front desk. Check-in was easy, as it should be, and I went directly to my room. I will note, like another poster, that there is nothing to state how much the valet parking is, but I did assume I was going to have to pay (turns out it's about $20 -- I thought it was $17 but another poster say's it's $21).
My room was a Grande King that I got using a corporate affiliation for $179. The room was pretty large, with a separate dressing area and small-ish bathroom with very modern bathroom fixtures. It overlooked the very beautiful pool. It was tastefully decorated in a style of understated modern elegance. The bed and bedding were quite comfortable, and the room was quiet.
There were some signs of damage to the wall (chipped paint) and evidence of a quick paint job on the wall of the dressing area -- on one wall it looked like someone applied too much paint using a roller and forgot to smooth it out, resulting in a dripped-down look. But this was a minor flaw in a great room.
Room service was very tasty, even if it was priced as highly as you would expect for this type of hotel. I only ordered once, a steak & french fries dinner with a sliced tomato and strawberry smoothie ran me $42 after tip and service charge. It was worth it, though!
The high-speed internet was free and I used it a few times. One time I tried to use it it was quite slow. Otherwise, this, along with the flat-screen, wall-mounted TV were nice amenities. The gym is pretty well equipped for a hotel, with multiple weight machines, bikes, treadmills, elliptical machines, and free weights. The lounge can be pretty loud at night but they seem to have done a pretty good job of insulating the rest of the hotel from the noise.
The hotel itself is pretty trendy, and the clientele is decidedly upper class (or at least they appear to be so). Even if you get a good rate, expect to shell out some extra cash for amenities while you are there; there are no easily accessible restaurants nearby, and there is no free parking.
On my next trip to Houston, I would be happy to stay at the ZaZa again and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an upscale, fun place to stay.
