“An old favorite that one craves their signature dishes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2011

Another lunch at this old favorite. A bit hard to find like a speak easy but worth the effort since it will become a favorite. It is family run and the younger generation has copied and improved their mom and pops recipies that can not be beat for the tastiest Asian fusion. The soups and spring roll that comes with your lunch are made of the freshest ingredients. Nothing is ever slapped together or stored from the night before. Mo Mong has stood the test of time and become a Houston favorite for the relaxed art filled atmosphere, excellent cocktail menu, and a pleasant, no matter the weather....patio.

“Worth trying, GIANT spring / summer rolls (not fried)”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2011

I have been going to all of the Vietnamese restaurants around Houston since we arrived so I have a lot to compare with. I have newly fallen in love with a soup with different names (Mekong and Canh Chua Tom), but is on the menus of the hip area Vietnamese restaurants. It is described as tamarind broth (sweet!), then features shrimp, okra, bean sprouts, tomatoes, and pineapple chunks. I have tried this now at about 6 restaurants and everyone does it different. At Mo Mong you could choose a cup or a bowl but the best value is the bowl because it is for about 4 people. Two cups for two people cost the same so we ate what we could and we reheated the rest the next day (this is a great soup to reheat). The good part was the amount of soup, but the shrimp were tiny and there was not enough okra and pineapple chunks. I have found all the soups around taste about the same, but this was the first restaurant to use the small (tiny) shrimp.

We were eating light and only ordered rice wrapped spring rolls for dinner. My husband had the vegetarian fried tofu rolls and I had the pork rolls. They were huge! Too much for two people, but we did eat them all! If you are ordering entrees go easy on the rolls. They were very tasty and best with the nuoc mam (fish sauce) even though they served them with the peanut sauce. The atmosphere was okay. The people there were very nice and the waiter was excellent, friendly and attentive. There were a few things missing for me, but if we were in the neighborhood we might go back. If you are spring roll fanatic, they had a whole lot of different kinds to choose from. They had a sit-at-bar downstairs which looked comfortable and relaxed. I'd recommend trying Mo Mong at least once.
