“Run of the mill Holiday Inn Express. I expected better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2009

Stayed here due to its proximity to Houston Hobby airport. Had a good rate and thought I would give it a try. The lobby is attractive and the hotel appears to have been recently renovated.

Bedding is nice, but I dont think that was a pillowtop mattress. I stay in Holiday Inn Express quite frequently and I can't help but wonder if the franchise mandates mattress types -- honestly I didn't care for this bed.

Front desk staff was extraordinarily friendly and helpful.

Breakfast buffet was a bit weak. I didn't care for the hot items. Not sure why the difference in this property.

Location is along one of those crazy Texas highway access roads. Not much in the way of food within a 5 or 10 minute drive. We had to go quite a ways to find something decent for dinner. (although I admit we could have been lost)

Probably won't go back to this one again.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express near Houston Hobby for one night between arriving back to Galveston after a cruise and flying out of Houston Hobby airport the next day. We are a family of four with an 11 year old and a 14 year old.

For a review of that cruise (Carnival Conquest), see my posting (under the same "T. Advisor King" screen name) for March, 2009 at
http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/memberreview.cfm?EntryID=54377

We had reserved through Expedia what is listed as a “King bed two-room suite” and paid just under $120, in advance, including taxes. The room and set-up were extremely shabby. The room was shown on Expedia as a one bedroom suite with the separate “bedroom area” separated with a partial wall from the main “living area” (which contained a pull-out couch). However, rather than a partial wall, the bedroom was in a separate room, with a normal doorway from which the door had been removed. The impression and screw holes from where the door hinges had been were obvious.

Generally, I don’t complain about room décor or presentation (check my other reviews to confirm this). But it struck me as odd that they wouldn’t just leave a door in the doorway, since it was obviously a separate room, rather than a partitioned area. In addition, the main part of the room with the pull-out couch looked more like an apartment a 20-year old might be living in a week after moving away from home. It contained a couch against one wall with chairs against the side walls. However, this set-up left gaps in the corners of the room where you might have expected to see end-tables and perhaps lamps. But they were just empty spaces in those corners.

Whenever the room had been painted last, the painters hadn’t done a very good job. The painters had rolled the walls, but hadn’t been careful about not hitting the ceiling (which was a different colour) with their rollers. In addition, they had either stopped painting and then started again after the wall was dry, or they had used two cans of paint with tints that didn’t exactly match, because there were roller marks in the middle of the wall with a slightly different shade of the wall colour than what was on the rest of the wall.

When we first arrived in the room, my wife noticed clumps of hair on the bathroom floor. She put down a towel and instructed our children not to walk into the bathroom in bare feet. It was hard to argue with that instruction.

The hotel is right on the edge of the interstate highway (I-45). I found the freeway noise to be consistent “white noise”. It didn’t keep me up at all. However, I can appreciate that other people may have trouble sleeping with that type of noise.

While the physical property was very disappointing, the staff were excellent. Because we had just come from our cruise, we arrived quite early (well before noon). The check-in clerk was extremely pleasant and helpful. She took our bags behind the check-in desk and, rather than simply holding them until we returned, had them delivered to our room once it was available. We left our bags before noon, then returned after dinner to check in and found our bags already delivered to our room.

A second reception clerk was on duty when we arrived in the evening and was extremely helpful with a few questions we had and with getting some additional items we required for the room. It is unfortunate that there are such good staff working at such an awful hotel. Given the variety of choices, I can’t imagine circumstances where I’d be willing to stay here again.

I recently stayed at this hotel and it is honestly one of the best Holiday Inn Express properties I have stayed at. The new carpet is phenomenal and the 100% smoke-free policy should be implemented at every hotel! The front desk spent as much time as I needed looking for a nice place to eat. The staff really cares about its guests.

I did not have any issues and plan on staying there again this month.

The staff was nice and tried to accomodate us, but the bottom line is that this place is a dump. The rooms are dingy. They use WAY too much scented air freshener or carpet fresh or something. We won't ever be staying there again for sure.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2007

My husband and I stayed at this hotel before a flight out of Houston Hobby airport. We were very pleased with the hotel....room, service, and location. We had the king bedded room I reserved, and were pleased to find a couch also in the room, as well as mini-fridge and microwave. The room looked like it had been recently renovated as everything was in perfect condition, including the bathroom. There is a digital thermostat to control heating/cooling, and the constant low fan kept the room perfectly comfortable, as well as providing nice "white noise" to mask the traffic sounds from the highway. We also loved the new Holiday Inn bedding system, which many hotels seem to be adopting, with sheets over and under a duvet or blanket, and a pillowtop mattress...very comfortable. Free high speed internet was a plus. We also received a call from the front desk after we'd been in the room for about 20 minutes, checking to make sure everything was satisfactory...nice touch. We would definitely stay here again when in the area.

This was a very good hotel for the money spent. The bathroom space was average. The beds were very nice. If you are a sports fan you have ESPN and TNT but no ESPN2 or ESPN News. The hot wings at the hotel restaurant were off the the hook!!! For $50 on priceline great stay, but the neighborhood is kind of rough.

The motel staff was very polite. The shuttle service was good. But the rooms were very noisy (even with ear plugs and the fan turned on) due to the 12 lanes of traffic right outside the window – the noise doesn’t let up all night. Due to the room layout and location of the window air conditioner, your bed area may be 75 degrees but the bathroom on the other side of the room may be 62. The Internet connection is VERY slow (unless you pay an extra $6 for an upgraded connection). They offer complimentary warm wine (you can add ice cubes), beer, 2 boxes of local cheese or 1 topping left over pizza and snacks in the breakfast area after work (~4:30pm - get there early if you want a slice ). The location is fairly convenient to the airport, easy to get on the Gulf Freeway, but I wouldn’t expect too much more. The staff is doing all they can to support the guests.
