I stayed at the Icon in early August, certainly not the best time of the year to visit Houston. It is a well designed property and has some sophisticated offerings, but the service is just not working.
Mind you, there were not too many problems, but when problems arrise, you see the difference between a real luxury hotel and Icon. No one follows through. No one responds and if they do, they don't seem to be able to fix the issues. It feels like the hotel has been "programmed" and if your needs fall out of the program, they just give up...reminds me of my computer! This just does not compare to Four Seasons, or even companies like Kimpton or Joie de Vivre, who really understand boutique hotels.
This hotel needs some soul and a management team that understands what "personal" service really requires.
I stayed at Hotel Icon for one Saturday night in July. For my anniversary, I booked and highly recommend the "Romance Package", which included a premium room with a king size bed and garden bath tub on the eleventh floor, champagne and chocolate covered strawberries, the bath butler treatment, and a wonderful breakfast at "The Bank" restaurant.
First off, the hotel interior is beautiful, and the room we had was large. The bathroom was about the same size as the bedroom, and it was beautifully decorated in a plush Victorian style with Molton Brown beauty supplies. The fun styling reminded me of the Hotel Monaco in New Orleans, but Hotel Icon was better. The bed was extremely comfortable, but the remote control for the TV had no batteries. This was quickly fixed with a call to reception.
The hotel is located in downtown Houston, and there was a $20 valet charge for overnight parking, but a complementary "London" cab took me and my fiancee to and from our destinations. All in all, it was one of the best hotel experiences I have ever had, and I highly recommend it.
HI is a great boutique hotel that has wonderful architecture and a stylish design. Stayed in a deluxe room that posessed a comfortable bed and a GREAT bathroom. The shower had two shower heads which hit your front and back at the same time(I need to get one of these at home!) Maid kept the room clean and was happy with their service. The Bank Restaurant is located within the hotel and is for those looking for the "high end" meals. The main course portions were small and the bill came to $130 for two by the time we were done.....Hotel is in walking distance to the train and other activities in the area, so it is in a great location. The I-45 is right down the street. Overall, the HI is highly recommended for those looking to stay away from the common chain hotels
Fantastic service. What a difference to find something with such character and characters in a world of bland, ubiquitous US hotels. Breakfast was good, the décor fun and the complimentary car service very convenient. The only problems we encountered could have been solved by leaving the comfort of this very nice hotel occasionally – cocktails from the bar were not very good and water from the mini-bar was horrendously expensive at $7 a bottle.
