I just returned from a two-day stay at the Hilton Americas. The hotel is beautiful. The rooms are immaculate. BUT the service truly stinks!
I travel often and I have stayed at all classes of hotels, and I can truly say that I have not stayed at a hotel that cares less about their customers than the Hilton Americas. From the time that I arrived until I left, I encountered unbelievably bad service (though there were a couple of exceptions, I must say). My bad experiences with the staff are too numerous to detail, and honestly, one such infraction would have been tolerable. But the service was consistently bad that it made my experience intolerable. For example, on my first night there, I ordered room service. The server arrived and informed me that I had to pay cash because I did not have a credit card on file. I explained to her that I indeed had a credit card number on file, as the person at the check-in counter had swiped my card with no problem. The server told me not to worry about it and that she would just charge the dinner to my room. Hours pass by, and I went to sleep. I was awakened by the same server who knocked on my door and insisted that I pay cash, saying that her manager made her come back. She refused to leave until I called to front desk to verify that I had a card on file, which I did. She said that she did not want to walk down there to do it herself!
Like I said, I cannot detail all of the service infractions that I witnessed (or this would turn into a book). But one thing angered me beyond words. The same night that I was harrassed by the room service waiter about my bill, I was again awakened by an unbearable noise (as soon as I got back to sleep!). I can't even describe it except to say that I cannot imagine that any human being could sleep through such noise. It went on for about a half hour and finally I called the guest services hotline to see what the problem was. After the guest services representative found out that I was on othe Sixth Floor, she told me that the noise was the "pipes." I asked her how long it would last, and she said, in a very matter of fact manner, that she had never received calls from guests about the noise after 11:30! I believe that to be a lie because the next night, I was awakened at 3:30 a.m. by the same noise! I called the front desk and told the person who answered that management should be ashamed and that I have never stayed at a hotel that cares less about their guests. He simply said in a very uncaring tone that he would pass my comments along. I did not get any more sleep that night.
I usually only care about the cleanliness of hotels, so I am usually pretty easy to please. But my stay at the Hilton Americas taught me that we as customers should demand much more than that for the prices that we pay. Or we should just take our business elsewhere, which is what I will do the next time that I'm in Houston (I go there often). For those of you looking for a hotel in Houston, the ICON is much nicer than the Hilton and the service is impeccable, which is why it is ranked so much higher than the Hilton (the prices are comparable too).
