I was visiting Houston for the first time, and wanted a place that was convenient to downtown (ie, not out by Galleria or the Astrodome), affordable (less than $100 per night, and no hidden fees like parking for the downtown luxury hotels), private (ie not a bed a breakfast). Oddly, didn't find that many options in Houston (seems like all the motels and cheaper hotels are way out in the suburbs). Came upon this Best Western Downtown and got a room (one king bed) for $69 p/n (plus tax), for five nights. Couldn't have been happier with my choice. Room was very large, modern, clean, and in addition to the usual (big tv, coffee maker), had some things I didn't expect (small refrigerator, small dining table with a few chairs around it, free high-speed Internet). No closet -- just an alcove with a clothes rack -- but that didn't bother me. Room and entire hotel were spotless; they said they had been open several years, but if they told me only several months I would have believed them - it was clean and freshly painted, and furniture all seemed new. Other amenities were: free parking, free cont'l breakfast (I didn't use, so can't vouch for quality), pool, and exercise room (small -- just had a few new cardio machines). Service was friendly and helpful, both for maid and front desk. Hotel was pretty empty, but I'm guessing that's because Houston just doesn't attract that many tourists over the Christmas holidays.
Location was fantastic - right between downtown (a few blocks to the east) and Melrose (a five minute drive to the west) and River Oaks (about a ten minute drive west) and the Galleria (maybe 15-20 minutes to the west). It's not like there are cafes and shops right outside the front door; but if you get in your car, all the attractions of core Houston (downtown, minute maid field, convention center, melrose, museum district, uptown/galleria, houston heights) are a very short drive. Seemed like a perfectly safe neighborhood -- looked like there had been a lot of construction (townhouses, etc) built in the last 10 years.
In sum, if you're looking for an affordable option that is convenient for touring Houston sites (or for business within Loop 610), and don't want to stay in a bed-and-breakfast, I think this is probably one of the best options in Houston (I drove around Houston for five days and didn't see any other comparable-class hotel in the vicinity -- only luxury hotels in downtown and in the Galleria area). This Best Western doesn't offer up a ton of charm -- no big surprise for a tourist-class chain hotel/motel -- but for under $100 a night, it met and exceeded my expectations
