I stayed at Hotel Derek for a wedding that was hosted there. The appearance and decor of the hotel is very beautiful. The rooms are clean and I loved the bathroom products. However, outside of the appearances, some issues occurred during and after my stay that calls into question the 4-star rating of the Hotel.

For some reason, the cleaning staff only had my reservation for one night. So when they arrived to clean, they were very confused and told us that we are supposed to check-out. They would not clean the room. When we checked with the desk, they said that the systems is showing that we are staying for 2 nights and that they will send the cleaning crew up. That alone would not have been an big issue, however, upon my return, I noticed inaddition to the charges on my receipt, the hotel had charged me an additional $130+ dollars three days AFTER I checked out. I called the hotel several times, left a couple of messages, and no one returned my calls (and still has not). Recommend if you stay there, double check your credit card statements for additional/mistaken charges and reverse the charges through your credit card company (don't wait for the hotel to return your call!).

Stayed here for a couple of nights whilst on business.

Relaxed hotel with good and friendly service.

It's in a good location, with 5 mins walk to the Galleria mall. Opposite a great Italian (Grotto), a 24 CVS Pharmacy and next to a live music bar with a late licence.

Used the complimentary town car for getting to the office and going out in the evening.

Most wacky thing is the plasma screen set into a fake fireplace - all it shows is a roaring fire. If you wait long enough you see the scene where the matches light it. Also you can watch it on one of the TV channels in your room - if you're that inclined.

  • Liked — Relaxed and informal

We stayed at the Hotel Derek, Oct 20-22. Upon arrival we realized valet is the only way to park your car. I think it was 12$ or 20$ a day. (My final charge had various parking charges). There is a strip mall with CVS across the street, but it isnt hotel parking.

Our check in went smoothly. Were were pleased to see a clean room with all the chrome shiny and a comfy bed, and plenty of light. Then as we stayed in the room more, we discovered there was no lock on the bathroom door(sliding door) and the tub was a couple different shades from the coating being worn off in sections. The carpet had a iron left on it at some point that resulted in a crunchy hard iron shaped impression on the floor. The room had a view of the interstate (Galleria view), even 11 stories up you could hear the traffic. The shampoos and soaps were nice.

Ate lunch in the bar area of the hotel restaurant. It was ok and priced like hotel food. (11$ for a ham and cheese sandwhich).
Did not use the pool or exercise room or spa.

Our first venture out we realized we should have left 15minutes earlier because it took that long to retrieve our car. Once the valet brought the car up I started to get in and he slammed my hand in the car door. Nothing was broken, but the valet did not even offer ice, let alone return the tip that i had already given him. He just happened to slam it between the thumb and index finger. I still have the bruise 5days later. I advised the Property Loss person and he took my room, address, etc.

At check out I related the story to the checkout person and they had no record of my report. The manager on duty did refund the parking charges, but that hardly made up for the possible litigation they could have had. Then today, there was a charge of 5$ on the credit card. Evidently the hotel staff said we drank the minibar water. In actuality we had purchased waters and drinks from the cvs across the street and since you cant bring liquids like that thru security at the airport we left all the drinks there. After calling the Hotel Derek the accounting department said they will refund our 5$. (Which isnt very much, but it was an additional wrong on their part)

There are lots of hotels in the same price range (St Regis for example) in the area. While your stay here wont be horrible, I believe you could stay elsewhere and leave uninjured and with a positive attitude toward the hotel.

Our family just spent the weekend at the Hotel Derek. It is on the corner of Westheimer and 410 Loop. It is very near the Galleria. We enjoyed our visit.
The furnishings are very modern including a platform bed and modern chrome, steel and glass everywhere.
The rooms are an average size (I believe they redid an older hotel) but sufficiently big. The bath is not too big but has the shower rod that bows out so it feels bigger and the rainhead shower that is nice. There are robes in the closet for your use. Our package included $25 per person for breakfast so we ate well each morning in their restaurant. (You can use the coupons for room service too.) It was great food and very friendly service. I believe you have to valet so plan to spend money on that or get a package that includes that. There is a CVS pharmacy across the street if you forget anything and they offer free transportation to anything within 3 miles in their Excursion. There are coffee pots in the rooms and free coffee (with syrups etc) in the lobby in the morning. The pool is pretty and a good place to read but very small for swimming. The fitness room was nice with free apples for your post-workout snack.

We had a nice visit and didn't encounter any troubles.

We stayed at the Hotel Derek last weekend. We drove up to the hotel which looked like a black glassed, office building when we exited the freeway. The driving directions are pretty easy from Houston's Hobby airport which is about 15-20 minutes away depending on traffic. Once we checked in, the room was extremely cosy. There were two bathrobes, an ironing board and iron, a sofa near the window with various magazines. The lobby had the current local newspapers plus they delivered the Sunday paper to our door in the morning. The bed was extremely comfortable and we loved the black shade in addition to the curtains to block out the sunlight so we could sleep really well in a dark room. The bathroom also had L'Occitane products which we love!

We wanted to eat downstairs at the cafe after 1 am. They had the bar open but wouldn't let us dine downstairs. They said we could order 24-hour room service instead. We didn't see what the difference was but went to bed instead.

There is no free parking so your only choice is to valet for $12.00+ when you arrive at the hotel.

It is located close to the Galleria shopping center.

All in all, it was an enjoyable, boutique experience. We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Derek and will defintely return on our next visit to Houston.

  • Liked — The comfortable bed and room!
  • Disliked — Not being able to eat at the cafe late at night, even while the bar is open. Also didn't like having to valet the car.
  • Tips/Secrets: — Don't forget to use the swimming pool!
