My sister had her wedding at Hotel Derek over Memorial weekend. I stayed with her overnight the night before her wedding. I'll break down my review in several sections (room stay, service, wedding event, reservations).
Room:
The hotel and room decor is very modern. In some ways I liked this. The room was comfortable and bathroom was not as small as I expected based on other reviews. I believe we had a standard king room. I liked that there was a sitting area against the window wall that was as long as the entire wall. This gave us alot of space for all our stuff plus cozy area for visitors to sit. We had a nice view of Houston's downtown skyline. The bed was very comfortable, and the nice thing about the room being modern is that it didn't have a old and uncomfortable bedspread. The bed was above average for me regarding comfort.
Service:
In general, I found the hotel staff was courteous and helpful.
Wedding event:
At times, there seemed to be confusion from time to time but overall, I believe the event went well. One thing I found disappointing is that the wedding party was promised 2 rooms to get ready in, and we had to call the front desk every hour to check on the status of availability. It would have been nice if someone from the hotel could have kept an eye on that and call us. Also, the junior suite that is included as part of the wedding package wasn't available for check in I believe a little late because the people that stayed in it the night before checked out late. It seemed like the front desk hadn't even noticed that they were late checking out until we came down to ask. It was after 1PM by this time.
Reservations:
Initially, I was going to reserve a room with the hotel for 2 nights during the wedding. I made a reservation online. I called hotel reservations a few hours later to make a special request. I reached central reservations and they told me that i needed to speak with the hotel directly. I called back and spoke to the front desk, and they said they could not find my reservation and to check back the following day. This had me concerned though so I called back central reservations to make sure I had a reservation. By now, I had received 2 emails confirming my reservation with a confirmation number. Central reservations confirmed they had a reservation for me and stated that online reservations take a day before appearing in the hotel's system. I'm thinking, this is odd. How do they avoid overbooking if the systems are not in sync. The lady I spoke to this time, took my note of special request. Several days later, we decided to cancel our reservation. I called the hotel during the day, and apparently if it's during normal business hours, there is a reservations department at the hotel that you get routed to rather than central reservations. Again, they couldn't find my reservation. I explained that I booked it online and it was part of a wedding group. After being placed on hold, she came back to tell me that she found my reservation in their other system. While I was checking in with my sister into her room, the front desk person asked if I was also going to be checking in. I asked how many rooms do they have left, and he responded they were oversold.
My stay in the hotel was comfortable, and I did like the room. I gave a 3 out of 5 rating because of all the lack of organization I observed in a couple of areas. For the location (Houston Galleria) , I found the room to be inexpensive and centrally located. One other disappointment was that there didn't seem to be much help with transportation. We wanted to take a shuttle to the mall, and concierge told us that one wouldn't be available for another 2 hours. We went outside and talked to the valet guy and he said a taxi would be hard to get at the moment. We ended up walking which wasn't too far, but it was hot. We were able to grab a taxi easily at the mall to come back.
