Our young family always enjoys staying at Homewood properties because of the separate bedroom accommodations and privacy this affords. Having two televisions is always a plus as well as the breakfast buffet with eggs, etc. This southern locale actually served gritts with cheese on the side. The breakfast at this location was not as organized as we've experienced elsewhere. They ran out of coffee on a Saturday morning and only had one waffle maker. Therefore, the service line was very congested. However, there was something for everyone in our family.
The only real complaint we had was with the amenities provided in our room. Our first assigned room was on the first floor, right by the exit door to outside. This was a noisy locale. The closets were broken and wouldn't stay shut, which was a safety hazard for our young children who wanted to play in them. There was not any welcoming coffee, popcorn, or even paper towels supplied in the kitchen either. We were politely moved quickly to the only other room left for the evening. This was a handicap unit on the third floor, which actually worked perfectly for our young family. The unit was larger and in a quiet locale. The bath had a tub with a pull down shower head which helped with our small children. This unit had more amenities such as a corner fireplace and coffee was set out in the kitchen but still not a kichen towel, popcorn, or other kitchen supplies to get you started.
When I inquired at the front desk, the night clerk who had replaced the first at check-in said "Just what do you need?" I wasn't sure what to ask for, and he gave me several items. I always hate to complain but felt their cleaning staff should have been instructed on what better to stock. With all of this said, we still loved staying with Homewood Suites, and they were very nice to match the rate offered to us by one of their partner hotels, Hampton Inn & Suites, located just down the road. Their location was very convenient to restaurants and our destination on Saturday, the Houston Space Center. It was our first time visiting the Space Center, and we literally spent all day there. Our young children loved the Superhero School, Martian playscape, and we all enjoyed visiting the Johnson Space Center austronaut training area. Our hotel actually had coupons for $5 off admission, which was a buck more than our military installation offered in prepaid ticket discounts. Our three year-old was free! We also used a 10% coupon in our brochure for all of our food purchases. As military, they also gave us 10% off in the gift shop areas. Hey, it all adds up and never hurts to ask!
On Sunday, our kids enjoyed a mid-morning swim in the pool before check-out. We then enjoyed visiting the Kema Boarkwalk on Galveston Bay. This was only 7-8 miles from our hotel. Parking was free, and a taxi boat easily transported visitors to the docks filled with restaurants, shops, and boardwalk rides and fun. We dined at Landry's, and the seafood and service was excellent. We were actually seated with a great bay view. It so happened to be the weekend for the "Blessing of the Fleet," and we enjoyed watching the pagentry of decorated boats beelining past as we dined. After a leisurely lunch, we enjoyed the little train and the carousel in the amusement area. We also browsed the expensive toy store filled with everything you could imagine for "Thomas the Tank Engine," my son's favorite. It was a great weekend, and we would definitely do it all again while staying at Homewood Suites!
