I went to El Real with a friend while in Houston on business. I was looking for Tex-Mex and this fit the bill. We sat outside and enjoyed a drink and the cool evening breeze while our food came. They kept the chips coming so we didn't mind the food taking a while. When it did come, my beef fajitas were quite good - well seasoned and marinated, and grilled to a nice medium rare. I ordered a half pound (the smaller portion) and even with a healthy appetite this was a huge dinner. The table filled with rice, beans, guacamole, salsa, cheese, sour cream and freshly made tortillas. We enjoyed the food and the night air until the street drama.
There's not much the place can do, but the outside seating is right by the bus stop. The 9:15 bus seems to attract some pretty unusual characters. While many of the bus goers were really nice folks who seemed to be headed home for the night after a long day's work, a few seemed to enjoy confronting and entertaining the guests. Some were funny, but others were not so well put together emotionally let's say. Overall, the drama was not a plus factor in the experience. Next time, I'd opt for inside seating.
Overall, the food is very good, the portions more than generous and the staff is accommodating. The most welcoming staff person: the guy who brought the chips early on and who was cleaning up as we left! But otherwise this was just not all that I had hoped for in terms of a relaxing experience.
