I've stayed at LaQuintas for years and had great experiences. I always felt safe with LaQuinta because the quality was high and uniform just about anywhere you go. My faith in LaQuinta is impaired following this recent stay (Sept. 3, 2004).
Our experience at the front desk upon check-in was somewhat disappointing; the desk clerk was very uninterested and had already slouched back down to watch the lobby TV by the time we were heading back out to the car for our luggage.
The room was a disappointment from the moment we entered it. It was a nonsmoking room, but from the smell, it was obvious people had smoked in it recently.
In a general way, everything was a bit shabbier than we're used to in a LaQuinta. In particular, the bathroom was a disaster. It was much smaller than is customary for a LaQuinta, and there was a lot of dust in the corners. The shower tile was nasty-looking, whether because of real filth or just a sloppy grout job, I couldn't say. The shower head was completely encrusted with some sort of brownish deposit, and there were black specks in the tub that looked suspiciously like mildew. There was definitely mildew on the caulking around the edges of the tub and the soap dish.
To make a bad situation worse, they'd advertised internet access -- something all the other LaQuintas I've stayed in over the past couple of years offered at no extra charge. But when we got there, we found out there is NO WIRELESS and NOT EVEN A DATAPORT. Their "internet access" is WEBTV, and they want $10 a day for it!
If it hadn't already been close to 11:00 at night, we wouldn't have stayed. As it was, we checked out the next morning and spent the rest of our time in Houston at a Hampton Inn a couple of miles away.
