At first, I was a bit uncomfortable having to stay at such a nice/expensive hotel for a conference -- after a day or so, I realized why this hotel was so wonderful. Perfect location, excellent appointments and details, and mostly great staff -- with lots of energy, who really care.
.
As I said when I checked in, using my Marriott Credit Card, "I'm usually a Courtyard kind of guy." The front desk folks simply smiled and asked me if I needed help with my bags - "No way! Not another waste of a tip," I thought. Later, I realized that the staff continued to go out of their way to help guests in almost every way - they were really great.
.
Rooms (I think I got a nice one) were generously laid out with a great working surface (lots of extra stationery items), fantastic media center (21" LCD with DVD player and "hub" for plugging in one's own electronics) and possibly the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in.
.
As above, service (room, housekeeping, front desk) was impeccable with many VALID reasons for comforts provided and tips. Shaving kit and many toiletries were provided in the bathroom "mini-bar" which was a great convenience. Not free, but good to have since I forgot my razor.
I am mixed on the lack of ice machines on each floor - since to keep my Diet Dr. Peppers really cold (mini-bar fridge was more of a "chiller"), I needed ice twice a day. Each time necessitated a special cal/request from housekeeping (and a $1 or $2 to "thank them" sigh). The upside is that no room is burdened with the noise of folks listening to folks getting ice or filling up their coolers. Later, I realized that nightime ice (and some dark chocolates, and the upcoming weather) was provided automatically with their turndown service. Nice, huhh?
.
I was also chagrined that the only parking available was valet for $27+ each nite (+ tips when dropping off/picking up one's car). I supposed I could have left my rental in one of the lots nearby, but this is River Oaks and very upscale part of Houston. I suppose they don't want guest and strangers randomly mixing and interacting in a parking deck, but I found the lack of self-parking for a more reasonable fee burdensome (although one might argue that the land necessary for parking is a big cost in this area of town).
.
Swimming pool was also a notch or so above average -- beautifully laid out. Not too small and a great treat on a medium-cool fall morning in Texas. Typical of the hotel, the guy who was cleaning the pool went out of his way to get me a towel.
.
Should I mention that the internet was priced a bit more than the "standard" $9.99/nite? Maybe a bit less, if one locked in a package for 3 days at a time. Just seems chintzy when such a great TV and DVD player is offered for free.
.
Room service and the hotel restaurant (Remington's) were both excellent. Not inexpensive but great quality, wonderful service, delicous food. Nice to have and worth the price.
.
Overall, I did feel that the value of the hotel (room, tips, parking, internet) was excellent given the wonderful quality and service that were present. Not a Marriott but compares very favorably with the best Ritz-Carleton's. This was a fantastic place with terrific service.
