“A gem of a garden - by appointment only”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2012

This garden is run as a foundation created by one person whose personal vision has shaped an interesting horticultural experience. We went in early spring (March) when no much was blooming. The guided tour pointed out many unusual species that the founder had personally collected on many trips. The property, located in Hempstead, Texas, also includes the founder's home, an art gallery, green houses. This is a volunteer run enterprise with much merit for those interested. For the casual garden goer, this will be a very pleasant walk through an interesting place.

After you've worked up an appetite, there's a Bar & Grill about 5 miles further down FM 359 called "The Thirsty Parrot" which was good for lunch. Both the gardens and the restaurant made the hours drive from Houston worthwhile.

“A wonderful place for people who appreciate nature and gardening”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2012

Peckerwood Garden is the private garden of John G. Fairy, who is responsible for introducing a wide range of rare, native plants from Mexico to an American audience. It is open to the public during specific weekends. They give guided tours and have a small nursery of plants that are not available in normal garden stores.

“Awe inspiring gardens!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2011

Peckerwood Garden is an amazing example of what can be done with Texas pastureland.
The 20 acre garden is filled with trees, green and flowing vegetation along with cactus and water treatments. The place is peaceful and beautiful. Our tour guide was very informative and be bought plants to take home. Well worth the trip to Hempstead, Texas.

“An outstanding garden”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2007

I toured this garden on one of the open garden days in spring,2005 with a group of Master Gardeners from Louisiana. This garden was the most outstanding garden I have ever visited. A wide variety of flora integrated with a unique collection of sculpture, made the visit most memorable. The owner was also a gracious informant and readily answered all questions. If you are a gardener, check out the open garden dates, and plan a trip to this area around this garden.

“Wonderful and Unique”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2003

Peckerwood is a true gem. Somewhat hidden and off the beaten path it is a must see for those interested in almost any gardens bus especially those interested in Native, Southwest, and Mexican plantings. John, the owner of the garden was very nice to talk with and took time with me to show off many plant favorites. Also, Next door is Yuccado Nursery which sells many of the same type of plants in the Gardens. Be sure to check their website for Open Dates as they are only open about 10 weekends thruout the year.
