“In search of a Texas steak”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

A traditional looking steak house in close proximity to Grapevine Mills mall. Had a decent steak and fries, although not grilled to perfection. The house specialty, the t-bone steak (by the restaurant labelled "huge"), was unfortunately sold out. Service was OK, although not in total control of orders at all times.

“nice laid back atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2013

Although situated between a motorway and a huge shopping mall, Saltwater Willy's has plenty of atmosphere with its fish and cattle themed decor.
They played a mellow mixture of blues, country music, reggae and pop when I was there and it wasn't crowded or noisy.
The food came quickly and was okay - nothing exceptional, but for a very reasonable price.
I had the gumbo - not spicy enough - and a crawfish duo (fired tails and etouffee) that I found rather heavy. Maybe I should have ordered boiled crawfish instead. I'd certainly like to try the po'boy oyster sandwich next time.

“Not sure why we would have seafood in Texas...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

In a group of 8 who wanted to have seafood. Found the food, service and decor just average. Good variety on the menu. Soup was good, ceasar salad was just okay. Entree size was average. Not bad but would not recommend as better options are within walking distance.

“First-time visitors don't repeat”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

Salt Water Willy's Seafood & Steak House seemed like a decent Cajun/Creole/Seafood restaurant when we browsed their website. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. It’s pricey, even iced tea is expensive. The service was OK, efficient, but maybe a bit quick to get our bill paid, the server came over right after dropping it off. The meals start with complimentary hushpuppies, nicely spiced with onion. It went downhill from there. One in the party ordered Mississippi catfish; it was four pieces of farm-raised catfish on an enormous bed of greasy, limp, overcooked fries. Unpalatable. The catfish was soggy and pasty, and almost flavorless. The cornmeal coating was acceptable, and was the most flavorful part of the dish. The worst catfish we have ever had. Would NEVER order again. The catfish etoufee was also ordered and was quite tasty, an excellent crawfish etoufee covered a filet of catfish. Very well done, a nice dark roux that any Cajun or Creole cook would pronounce as just right. The catfish filet, which shared the same textural misfortune of the fried catfish, was wrapped around a crab cake, or that’s what it seemed to be. Mealy and loaded with bread, not a lot of crab. The sides were the real disappointment; vegetables that were just sticks of zucchini and yellow squash with onions and tiny threads of carrots, thrown in for color. Greasy and flavorless, but at least not mushy like so many other places do when they overcook squash. Finally, the “dirty rice”, as it was called, was reminiscent of fried rice, it even tasted of soy sauce. A true dirty rice is made with ground livers as well as other ingredients that were conspicuously absent, or had been rendered invisible. The final bill was a bit of sticker shock as well. Maybe it was for all those fries on the plate (way too many). We never noticed any smoky smell as others have mentioned; the place was sort of dead for a Saturday evening. As stated, we were very disappointed, and will never go back.

“Terrible terrible food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

Stopped by for dinner on a Saturday night. Nice server and good service, but food was cold and bland. Extremely expensive for crud seafood. Even Red Lobster can put out a better plate of seafood than this place and costs a few dollars less. Avoid the food. The entire restaurant smells like cigarette smoke so we had to eat outside. Can't believe this place is open. Go to the other restaurants near the mall. Worst meal I've had in awhile
