“Nice but expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2014

Hard to figure out the star rating. The resort should be 4 stars but prices bring it down. The resort itself is nice: rooms clean & comfortable, staff pleasant, atrium unique. But the prices for anything from soft drinks to... whatever... are ridiculous. So if you want a nice place to stay the Gaylord Texan is good, but leave the resort to eat or shop.

I attended a two-day conference at this location and stayed at the hotel. Dallas in July can be hot and during my stay temperatures outside approached 100 degrees. But I never knew it. The property is large with many restaurants and bars all situated in or around a large atrium area with an Alamo-like theme. The meeting rooms were situated on one end of the property and they were a little small, but functional. So while there was plenty of walking and variety, I never went outside from Wednesday night until Friday when we went back to the airport.

There were a few other business meetings going on in the meeting area, but the place seemed dominated mostly by vacationers. Primarily families with children. There are some swimming pools and a water attraction nearby (never saw it), so walking through the common areas could be loud and crowded. However the family attractions must have been far enough away from the meeting areas that there were no distractions once we got down to business.

We ate at two of the restaurants on the property and had lunch catered in. All the meals were good (not great).

As for the room, I only had two complaints. While it had all the normal comforts such as a bed, desk, chair, TV and bathroom, the housekeeping was a little off at least in my case. The shower curtain had black mildew all along the bottom edge and it just looked gross. There was also a bit of tissue left in a corner on the floor when I checked in. Although not a big deal (the tissue bit was still there when I checked out) it made me wonder how well they actually cleaned the rooms.

I also had a problem with the in-room coffee maker. They are simple machines with only an on/off button but mine just didn't work. I called housekeeping at 6:00 am and they said they'd send a replacement right away. I called again at 6:30 and they said to try and put more water in it. When that didn't work, they said they'd send one right away (again). It arrived at 7:00 am. I got my cup of coffee. But then they started running a vacuum cleaner in the hallway, which I thought was odd for so early in the morning. If I had been in bed, as surely many of the family vacationers were, it would have been a disturbance.

Otherwise, the staff was friendly and courteous and the main open area was attractive. A few of the families with kids that I chatted with in the elevator said they were having fun.

Room Tip: If you want to watch the people and can take a higher level of noise, get a room facing the atrium...

The convention center is very spacious an you don't feel closed in. My accommodations were nice with good size room for 4 to share. Bell hop service was excellent and so was valet service helping to load vehicle. Huge space to explore and enjoy.

Front desk service needs improvement. I have stayed 3 different years and the billing is never correct. Be sure to scrutinize your bill/receipt.

Room Tip: lAsk for room "with room" if sharing quarters with roomies. Good walking shoes in between...

Green Features: There are several recycle receptacles throughout the hotel. But i did not see any signage in rooms about fewer towels and changing sheets. This hotel is huge and even the atrium is air conditioned; if you are interested in reducing your carbon footprint you would not like this hotel.

We stayed at the resort over July 4th. The property was well kept, rooms clean, and the service was friendly. The water park is newly opened and we felt it was a bit small compared to other similar resorts we have visited. It will probably grow in the future, and hopefully grow toward the resort. Taking a shuttle bus to reach the water park was not our favorite thing. Once we arrived though the area was very clean and the pool side staff attentive. They had fun games and entertainment for the children. The fireworks offered with a rooftop view were nicely done and it seemed there was some sort of entertainment or games for the family going on at various times of the entire day. Overall, I would say the Gaylord Texan is a beautiful place to stay.

Spent the weekend at the Gaylord. It's a great spot for a mini vacation. Know upfront it is on the expensive side, but our opinion is worth every penny. Not as large as the Nashville or Orlando sites, but just as nice.

We had an atrium room with two beds. Bathroom was clean and roomy The room large enough for four. Loved the walking paths and amenities. Indoor pool, outdoor pool, recreation area, night club activities for the adults. The kids got to meet Toothless the dragon. Great firework shows also! The water park is too small and we had a hard time figuring out where to find the shuttle. We jus stayed at the outdoor pool. It's on the small side also, but plenty of seating and poolside service. Only complaint is pools were cold! They are listed as heated. Someone lied! Staff was friendly. Loved the Italian resturant. Be sure to make reservations for the resturants. We watched folks get turned away. Will be back and soon. This hotel offers wonderful military discounts! Thank you Gaylord for taking care of our servicemen and women!

Room Tip: There is so much to do, you won't stay in the room. Shop for the best rate!

Stay here a few times a year with the family for the past several years. Beautiful interior that is similar with walkways to the San Antonio Riverwalk area. Lots of beautiful indoor landscaping. Tons of free entertainment for couples and families year round. Room are always clean and beautifully decorated. Staff always helpful and lots of great dining indoors. Two big thumbs up!

Stayed here with my wife and kids. We were a party of 5 and had reserved a suite, but the room had only 1 bed and a pull out couch. For the price, I would have thought a room with 2 beds would be standard. The hospitality and service were great, as were the pools and water park. The restaurants were a bit expensive especially with such great food available in Grapevine, but you kind of know that going in. The River walk Cantina is good for kids.

We do provide in regular rooms double queen beds. If you prefer the suite we can fit up to two rollaway beds to accommodate families.
