“Gaylord Texan at Christmas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2011

The Christmas decorations at the Gaylord are fantastic! The hotel is beautiful. We went to see the Ice show for the 4th time, took my niece and nephew and spent the day enjoying the decorations and the show. We had a great time. The room was clean and very comfortable. We will be back!

The place is huge and if you like staying in a place where you're surrounded by tons of people taking each other's picture, you might like it. Way too busy for me. Seemed like we were always waiting in line for one thing or another... which is why we got valet parking. We had waited at least 20 minutes just to drive up to the hotel and didn't want to get lost parking in the 'complex' or have to walk a long way back to the hotel. What a surprise to see the overnight valet charge of $25.98! We will NOT stay there again.

Dates of Stay: Saturday, 11/12/11 - Sunday, 11/13/11
Total Nights: 1

In a nutshell, a truly beautiful resort, in a convenient location, with all sorts of activities to do for a weekend of Winter and Christmas Holiday Fun!

Now, for my detailed review:

My wife and I wanted to visit Texas to see her nephew; we wanted to take him to see "Ice!" at the Gaylord Texan, as "Ice!" was themed after "Shrek" this year. We figured, what better place to stay for this trip than Gaylord Texan, so that we would have a room close to all of the "Ice!" action. It was truly the perfect choice, as "Ice!" definitely can tire out a kid! It was so wonderful and convenient to be able to retreat back to the room every so often.

We arrived early in the morning on Saturday, and were a little worried that our room would not be ready yet, as we checked in around 10 am. However, much to our surprise, as soon as we checked in, we were told that our room was ready for us. At many properties, this would not be possible -- but, with the superb customer service at Gaylord Texan, this was not a problem at all. Upon arrival, we were amazed by all of the wonderful holiday decorations, and we were quickly ushered to the Front Desk/Registration area. We were greeted with a smile, and treated exceptionally. The Agent quickly and efficiently checked us in, and she took her time explaining all of the amenities of the massive resort to us. It was truly excellent service, and having no Elite status with Gaylord, I was extremely impressed.

After Checking-In, we took a leisurely stroll across the beautiful main atrium, which was fully decorated for the holidays. One piece of advice, pay close attention to which set of elevators you are told to use at the Front Desk, as there are several different sets of elevators, each serving different sections of the property.

Always enjoying larger and more luxurious rooms, we opted to book an "Atrium View" room in the "Lone Star Tower." The "Lone Star Tower" is located in the main section of the building, and offers more luxurious amenities. The rooms offer upgraded bathroom amenities and bath products, as well as double sinks and beautiful granite vanity and entry-way. The bath products are of very high quality, on par with upper-level resorts, such as Hyatt properties. And, rooms in the "Lone Star Tower" also offer wonderful extra-plush terry robes, and beautiful beds, featuring elevated head-boards and foot-boards. The extra amenities in the "Lone Star Tower" are definitely worth it, and I highly recommend booking a room in that more luxurious tower.

And, in addition to those upgraded amenities, another HUGE plus of the "Lone Star Tower" is the location. The rooms in this tower are located in the main building, right in the center of the resort. This allows for quick and easy access from the lobby, and ease of access to all areas of the resort.

There are two types of views offered from the "Lone Star Tower," "Texas View" and "Atrium View." "Texas View" rooms are, as expected, rooms that face the exterior and allow a view of Texas. These rooms as slightly less expensive than the "Atrium View" rooms, but I highly recommend an "Atrium View" room. These rooms have beautiful balconies that overlook the Main Atrium of the resort. The balconies have comfortable chairs to allow one to just sit and relax, enjoying views of this truly beautiful property.

All-in-all, we were very impressed with our room, and, once we dropped off our baggage in the room, we were ready to explore. And, as this is a very large resort, there is no shortage of things to do. My wife and I took a stroll throughout the property, and we were constantly amazed at the meticulous detail taken in all areas of the resort.

First, there is the Main Atrium, which is one extremely large, open area with beautiful glass roof -- and, in the center of that roof is a large Texas-style star. In this Main Atrium, there are walking pathways, and ample restaurants and bars. Then, off of the beautiful Main Atrium, on either side, there are two other separately themed areas. One side of the resort is called the "Hill Country" area, which has a rustic, Native American feel to it. The other side, "Riverwalk" offers an Old-Mexican style feel, with a beautiful "river" running through it. Each area offers truly beautiful scenery and plenty of relaxing places to enjoy a vacation. All-in-all, this property is truly beautiful and provides a wonderful vacation destination!

And, on top of all of the beautiful scenery and ample activities, during the Winter Season, this property -- much like other Gaylord properties -- goes all out, offering a truly fun experience called, "Ice!" This year, Gaylord partnered with Dreamworks and "Ice!" was themed after "Shrek." This is a truly amazing experience that I recommend everyone travel to at least one Gaylord property each year to experience. It is fun for all ages, and it is truly amazing to see what the artists are able to do with the ice.

This is definitely a property that should not be missed. It is in a perfect location, with quick and easy transportation options from the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, and it is within a short drive to wonderful shopping and dining options. I would highly recommend staying at this truly beautiful property, and we would definitely be interested in staying here again next year -- especially if they were to bring the "Madagascar" theme there for "Ice!" next year!

Room Tip: Make sure to book a "Lone Star Atrium View" room, and request a high floor!

Having arrived here for a conference, I was completely blown away by the hotel. It was amazing in size with several different atria. As my time there progressed, I witnessed the complete transformation into a winter wonderland. Just wished I was there when the Shrek adventure opened. It was a great conference hotel with many break-out areas and donut breaks (krispy kreme - what a treat) and for a holiday in the summer with kids it would be great too. Not really one for couples. Amazing experience though. Clean and tidy as you would expect.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the convention centre would probably be quieter than those overlooking the atrium.
