The view of the lake from the wraparound porch was the best part of our recent stay at the Captain's House. Like most of the B&Bs in Granbury, the price of admission is greater than B&Bs located elsewhere in Texas -- because of the location. Not only does the Captain's House overlook the lake, it is also within walking distance of downtown Granbury -- a great plus for anyone wanting to spend a weekend in this quaint, historic town. And, even though owners Bob and Liz were quite nice, they also had many rules (written and unspoken) for their guests, which made our weekend less than desirable. Besides the "No Smoking, No Candles and No Incense Burning" which we all understood and appreciated, there was also the "make sure the upstairs back door stays closed" rule, which wasn't easy to keep because the door had a tendency to open by itself even when it was closed. And, instead of everyone gathering downstairs for breakfast, our meals were delivered outside each room on a tray, with instructions to "please put your plates back on the tray and your napkins on top when you're finished eating" rule. There was also the unspoken "do not arrive earlier than 4 p.m." rule and the "we'd really like you to check out before noon" rule. All these rules kept us from having as relaxing a weekend as we otherwise might have had. However, we did enjoy the homemade oatmeal cookies baked shortly before our arrival, as well as the time spent with our friends in the parlor area upstairs and the adjoining porch. Breakfast was rather ordinary, with french toast topped with blueberries one morning and an egg and sausage casserole the next. Based on the reviews I've read, perhaps Bob & Liz were having an off-weekend during our stay. However, considering we were celebrating a special birthday for one of our friends (even bringing the cake with us), even a "Happy Birthday" would have been nice. As stated earlier, the Captain's House is in a great location, but the structure itself needs quite a bit of maintenance and remodeling to make it worth the $150+ per night each couple paid. Members of our group all agreed we would not be recommending the Captain's House to anyone in the near future.
