Positives: fantastic smoked meats and sides, friendly staff
Negatives: slow service, mess hall seating, closed mid-week
Inspired by reviews and reinforced by advertisments, we decided to try Hammond's BBQ during a day trip to Glen Rose. We were not disappointed. They obviously deserve the brisk business and good reputation they enjoy.
That's not to say everything was perfect during our visit. We arrived about 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday evening, certainly a peak period. Although the parking lot was almost at capacity, a space came open at the front door. People streamed into the building as we got out of the car; about 20 folks entered immediately before us.
I was surprised to find "mess hall" seating...rows of standard wooden picnic tables...lined from wall to wall in their dining hall. Customers seated themselves wherever they found an opening. (Visions of high school lunch period flashed across my mind as we entered.)
This arrangement limits privacy, but does facilitate rapid seating. We quickly found the equivalent of an airline "middle seat" between a couple of families near the center of the room.
Hammond's menu contains options usually seen in a barbecue eatery...an assortment of smoked meats (beef, pork, turkey, et al) and sides (okra, potato salad, etc.) We ordered their "new" appetizer, jalapeno okra, and two entrees, a sausage plate and a baked potato stuffed with chopped brisket.
Like a lot of casual restaurants, drinks are served in quart-sized glass canning jars. This is a smart move. The jars match the motif, and the amount of product they contain reduces the number of times a server must refill the container. Good thing, too, as our server didn't offer a refill until we had finished eating.
The okra appetizer was nicely sized for two people. It had a hint of jalapeno, but was not too spicy. A small container of ranch dressing for dipping completed the order.
Entree' portions were also ample, but not overwhelming. (Some restaurants pile on the food to the point of excess!) Our potato was smaller than many barbecue restaurants, but was enough for a meal. The sausage plate cost more, but logically contained more product. We took about a third of it to the hotel for dinner the next evening.
Pickles and onions accompanied both meals. Sauce was served in a carafe. It was tasty in a Texas sort of way...thin, not sweet, with a little "bite".
Because we'd shared a piece of pie earlier in the day, neither of us were interested in dessert. That was also a good thing! Several people around us asked about dessert, particularly the cobbler. An older staff member (the owner?) said they were out of almost everything.
Hammond's offers excellent food at a fair price. No wonder people flock there. The staff was slow, but friendly. (They may be faster with a smaller crowd.) Although not "perfect", this is an enjoyable place to eat, one to which we would return. If you decide to go, plan accordingly. They only offer a lunch on Tuesday and Sunday, and are closed Wednesday.
