“Average lodge - beautiful location!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2005

Fossil Rim is a very nice place to visit if you love animals. The work they do there is spectacular. There are quite a few places to stay in the small town of Glen Rose, but if you want to stay on site, The Lodge at Fossil Rim is your only choice. While the house and grounds are beautiful, the rooms are just average. There are two downstairs rooms which share a bath. There are two rooms on the second floor which have private baths and one huge suite on the third floor. The staff is friendly, but the place needs a bit of polishing. Since there were four of us, we took the two downstairs rooms. Our mattress was very hard and we did not have any extra pillows or blankets (which we really needed). The lamps in one of the rooms were so poor that we had to get another out of the living room to see. These may seem like small inconveniences, but the prices here are very high. OUr rooms were $150/night each. If you decide to stay, choose the rooms upstairs - they seemed better equipped although they are also more expensive. They provide breakfast, but you must go down to the safari camp to eat. The tour of the property is $45.00/pp but it was very interesting. It was led by volunteers and they were great! The Best Western in town is really a better choice.

We stayed in the Peregrin room at the Lodge for $330/ night (family of four). The room was beautiful and spacious; the bathroom was lovely. The whole lodge is comfortable and inviting. Unfortunately, the room was not well-maintained which led to little unexpected frustrations during our stay. Several lightbulbs were out (showering by Braille was not fun), soaps and shampoo were limited, and there was no way to start a fire without using a whole Sunday Dallas Morning News newspaper. These things would have easily been overlooked in a room half the price, but were irritating when paying so much for one night. There is no one to call with these problems as the "manager" is often working elsewhere. Finally, you should know before you go that guests cannot wander far from the lodge due to the wildlife being just outside the fence. No morning jogs or hikes! We loved Fossil Rim, the people were nice and the place is beautiful. Just felt that we paid too much for the accomodations.

We enjoyed our visit to Fossil Rim, and the Lodge. We went with some friends we stayed in the Parrot Room and our friends in the Peregrine Room. The lodge itself is really neat and has some beautiful antiques. I think that it could use a little tlc, for the price of the rooms. The water runs no so clear. We filled the jacuzzi in the parrot room and when we turned it on it smelled like sulphur really bad , had to abandon tub idea , and the beige tiles in jacuzzi on edge are really sharp not bullnose. Our friends said the water in their room wasn't clean and they let it run for awhile. The best feature of the lodge in my opinion is the beautiful fully stocked bar, on the honor system. The bar is very detailed hand crafted bar with stained glass very pretty. The view and location of this lodge is absolutely beautiful. Our only complaint is it could use a little maintence, paint, etc.. Parrot room-Heater hanging in bathroom ceiling barely hanging there, faucet in bathroom mounted too far back can't get hands under water too close to back of sink. Staff very friendly & courteous. Pool closed :( Dinner at safari camp was wonderful. I have had worse at fancy restraunts. Beautiful!!

We were amused to learn that the Lodge was the residence of the former owner of Fossil Rim, an Oil Barron. He lived in luxury! The Peregrin room on the 3rd floor was his master suite, and for one night it was ours. You transcend 2 spiral staircases to find your room, the only room on the 3rd floor, overlooking the hills of Fossil Rim.

There are 2 living areas, an open bar, a kitchen, an outdoor grill (on the balcony), beautiful views and wildlife all around. The other suites were smaller, but the Peregrin room was spacious. We had plenty of room for the Pack N Play plus 2 roll away beds for the older kids, and it was still very roomy. I highly recommend the Behind the Scenes tour, along with your stay at the Lodge.

They serve a nice comp breakfast at the Safari Camp, and dinner was very comfortable as well. The Marshmallow Roast after dinner was a bonus, the kids were thrilled to find an armadillo wandering around who was not at all bothered by the kids, flashlight, nor cameras.

We cannot wait to return, next time the Baby will enjoy it more.

Fossil Rim is extremely beautiful. The lodge is nice, but we enjoyed the night we spent in the "tent". The people there are so nice. If you can, go on the feeding tour. it was great. Glen Rose is a nice small town. there are several nice shops in the town square...be sure to eat at Two Grannies....what a fun place! and, the food is good. Be sure to see the Promise....what a great show. I took my niece for her 12th birthday, and we had a wonderful time. We spent 2 nights, and did not get to do everything we wanted to....Worth every penny you spend.

My first impressions of the Lodge at Fossil Rim were not good. Here are reasons why: in the main living area there were stains in the carpet and the television was not working properly, and some items in this room seemed old.In my opinion, things like this can indicate to me how well-maintained or not so well-maintained a place is kept. These are little things and I just decided to overlook them at the time.We were disappointed in the "natural spring fed pool". It was actually a pond;not a pool, that was filled with fish and moss, etc.The evening dinner and campfire were very nice. The safari tour was excellent! Lots of animals to see and that you can feed. My 2 and 4 year old boys loved it!I gave you the good and bad, now for the ugly... Upon arriving home, we discovered that the whole family had been infested with head lice.I highly recommend Fossil Rim but NOT The Lodge. Maybe try the Best Western - less expensive, has a real pool, etc.
