Seriously, I have been reading the reviews on Rough Creek and I am amazed we were at the same place! We just took the family last weekend. We paid $199 per night each for two suites! The rooms are spacious and beautiful and the entire staff was awesome. We were so sad when it was time to return to the city! We did ask for the renovated rooms and they are amazing! We have stayed with them before but this was the first time in the new rooms. WOW! We stayed in the Lamar and the Lukenbach suites. Each had a wine cooler if you want to bring your own wine to drink on your private patio complete with large rocking chairs for perfect viewing of the brightest stars in Texas. Each room has 3 plasma t.v.'s (Bath, bedroom, den), temperpedic mattresses, dual armoires, dresser, seperate bathtub, shower with jets that spray your back, iron & board, hair dryers and special features that may not be obvious like bathroom drawers that gently shut themselves so your neighbors aren't disturbed by slamming drawers. The den has a very comfortable leather sofa and chair, fireplace and a huge wooden door that rolls shut to darken the bedroom and add privacy.
Yes, as most resorts out there, there is a $25 per person resort fee. Big deal, they have a large family pool with spas and a lazy river, an adult pool, a spa, rock climbing, a shooting range (not to mention hunting) a zip line, ATV's, horseback riding... Really? If money is too tight for this luxurious resort go to the Holiday Inn. I really don't know how it could possibly compare to the joy we experienced at their beautiful facility.
We had several meals here as well. Never had one problem with the food. It was excellent as usual. We have eaten here many times and have always had great service and food. I especially love the fresh blueberry pancakes at breakfast. The back wall of the dining room has a panoramic view of the property and directly out the doors there was a family making smores in the patio fireplace. The children love this place! There are rabbits running around that they were catching, petting and feeding.
I am posting photos to show you how much fun we had. I have no stake in this, just trying to set the record straight.

My wife and I spent New Year's Eve at Rough Creek. Over the years, we had heard good things about the resort so we decided to give it a try. The price, a staggering $1100, included one night's lodging in a suite (for two), New Year's Eve dinner and a brunch buffett the next morning.

You may want to consider our experience before you part with a
cool "G":

1. Lodging - We stayed in the Dwight D. Eisenhower suite,
room #431. It was spacious and elegantly appointed. The views from the balcony were nice but not spectacular ( where did
all the trees go?). The best thing about the suite was the fire place. I am still wondering if the suite was worth $500 - $600!

2. Food - The prearranged dinner menu reminded me of a meal one would eat at deer camp. I happen to like grilled quail
but my wife does not. I happen to like rare beef but my wife does not. What was the chef thinking? Why not offer choices? On a scale of 1-10, the dinner was a solid 2. Many folks around us sent their food back. We firmly complained to our waitress and received a complimentary loaf of bread (are you kidding me?).
The breakfast brunch was slightly better, maybe a 5.

3. Entertainment - Unless you plan to hunt birds or shoot skeet, be prepared to be bored out of your mind. The bar is extremely small. There is really no place to kick back and
relax, other than your room. And this lodge is in the middle of nowhere ... located on a slab of rolling prairie land. Few trees
and not much wildlife, other than an occassional deer or cotton
tail.

In summary, we can now add this place to our "been there, done that list." I cannot imagine us ever returning. Driving two hours to a boring, grossly overpriced lodge with bad food "wouldn't be prudent." Sorry, one of the suites was named the George H.W.
Bush Suite." Returning? Just wouldn't be prudent!

  • Liked — Fireplace in the suite; 3 flat screen televisions
  • Disliked — Grossly overpriced; food was below average to bad.

It feels a little strange reviewing such a nice place as a "neutral" expereince, but that is the most appropriate.

One down sides was the expense. It is really expense and they charge a per person fee as opposed to a per room fee. Additionally when we went, it was a trip to get out of town and was in March. It was a little chilly to do to much outside. The pools weren't opened yet. The rooms were nice, but the room we were staying in was brand new and I think we may have been the first people in it so they had some quirks. The hot water and the bathroom light were not properly working. None of it was that bad and it was all well handled, but when you are paying so much for a room you don't want to have problems. The up side was the food. Whether it was breakfast or dinner, the food was ridiculously good!

We have stayed at Rough Creek Lodge numerous times over the last 7 years to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays. We recently wanted to spend a weekend at the lodge and treat friends to dinner in the restaurant, but when we found out that the "special" was about $330 per person per night (the $75 per person dinner is included), we decided that the rooms are definitely not worth over $500 per night for a couple. We were accustomed to what we considered a high price of $250 to $300 per night, but this is crazy! So, we had a very nice dinner at the restaurant then retreated to a reasonably priced, new motel in Glen Rose. We have traveled to other "high-end" destinations over the years, but Rough Creek has priced themselves off our list of hotels.

We have stayed there for 3 or 4 times and used the restaurant for more than 10 times. We enjoyed there first time (5 years ago) but services have been getting worse (and getting more expensive) since then.

Last time, our room was dusty, but this time rooms were better.

An employee at the reception was not nice at all. He made several mistakes, but made no apology (he didn't even greeted). He may not be able to speak good English. Usually employees there are very nice, so I wonder why they put this person at the reception desk. Even cheaper motels would have more friendly employees.

We are tired of small variation of their dishes at the restaurant. They have only a few selections from the menu, and the menu hasn't changed much since 5 years ago. Especially this time, they didn't have what we wanted have from the menu, so we were forced to choose main dish from fewer selections.

We had a toddler with us for the first time. Before checking in, we had lunch at the restaurant. Our child needed to change diapers, and we found there was no diaper changing station all over the lodge!

The manager told us before they tried to make their lodge children friendly. I think they should know what is the basic needs for children before building fancy pools for kids.

I may be too picky. But we paid more than $1300 per night, they should have served us better. They are still our special place, but not as much, unfortunately.

Rough Creek Lodge is an amazing place! We had our wedding there this past December and everything was outstanding. I am surprised to hear so many negative comments on service because we felt the staff was exceptional at all times. The on staff coordinator was also equally great and we heard nothing but glowing reviews from all of our guests. The food was awesome and everything went off without a hitch. I would recommend Rough Creek to anyone and we just booked a weekend stay there for our one year anniversary!
