“Family vacation worth the splurge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

My children & I had a nice, relaxing vacation at RCL in August 2012. This was our first trip to the lodge. When we arrived, our room was not yet ready, so my children played checkers in the great room while enjoying lemonade & cookies, which are available each afternoon. They also received their own goody bag, with personalized cookies, kites, and pool toys.

We were able to go to our room within 15 minutes of our arrival. We stayed in a suite on the 2nd floor. The suite had a large bedroom plus a sitting area & balcony. Both rooms had a flat-screen TV and the sitting area included a sofa bed, desk & chairs. There was a small refrigerator in the bedroom as well as candies (refreshed daily) and ground coffee + creamer. (not the pods & powdered stuff you typically find) The bathroom also had a TV which faced the bathtub.

The food was amazing; I must have gained at least 5 lbs during our stay. Dinner selections were changed each evening. Everything was delicious! There was also a children's buffet available if children have dinner with their parents. (The Kids' Party also provided the same buffet at the Kids' Ranch.) If your child is a picky eater, you can ask for a basket of french fries. I noticed another family ordered chips/nachos during dinner; they may be other options off the menu which can be requested. Bread was served prior to each meal. (I purchased 2 loaves to take home, which were baked fresh the morning of our departure.) The breakfast buffet contained hot/cold selections each morning. The pancakes and waffles were fantastic. Oatmeal can be requested; it comes with brown sugar, raisins, and blueberries. House-made biscuits, muffins, and bagels were also available.

There was plenty to do during our stay. My kids enjoyed fishing on the pier, playing at the family pool (and eating ice cream in the afternoon!), taking a pony ride, petting the animals at the corral, hitting golf balls from the driving range, playing chess above the dining room, and spending time at the Kids' Ranch each evening. We also explored the property by renting a Mule. Next time we hope to do some horseback riding.

There is plenty of bottled water throughout the lodge & in the room. (Nice during the Texas summer!) When we checked out, we were given a bag which contained cookies & a loaf of house-made bread. Since the lodge is 'small' relative to large hotel chains, the personal attention was really appreciated. We could relax w/out the normal summer crowds. While the cost may be higher, it is worth the splurge for a different type of family vacation, and many activities are included in the price of the room. We hope to return during the holiday season.

Room Tip: Ask for room on top most floor, to avoid noise from guests above.

My family and I have been to Rough Creek Lodge three times in the last few years. The ranch land is beautiful, very well maintained, yet natural. There are lots of activities for children and adults... spa, sporting clays, horses, hiking, etc. The restaurant food and atmosphere are both amazing. I loved the homemade hummus and the best biscuits I have ever eaten. This is a very classy place with a very helpful, genuine staff.

Our company celebrated their 20 year anniversary at RCL. We had a total of 40 people (Adults and Kids) It was a family event. I started planning this event approx 6 weeks out, and from day one Christy Lemons was a saving grace, She helped me with every aspect of planning and keeping everything organized. We had group events planned,a nd people had their own events planned and Christy help take care of it all. Once we arrived she was always availabl for any questions or concerns I had. The staff there was remarkable. They were helpful and always friendly. i do not think I ever walked past an employee with out them saying "hello, how are you today" There is so much on site to do, we were there for 3 days and we still did not do everything. The food was TO DIE FOR!!!!!! You will NOT leave there hungry, that is for sure. Everything was so organized, and if there were any questions, they always found me to make sure they handled everything the way we wanted. I would recomend RCL to anyone looking for a fun geta way, weather it be for a company outing or a family outing, they can take care of it all.

We just returned from a beautiful weekend at RCL. The restaurant was spectacular, the room was comfortable and the spa was magnificent. The service from every staff member member we encountered was superb. The staff were very genuine and would go out of their way to help.

It's a bit expensive, but well worth it in my opinion. We did a variety of activities and were quite pleased. This is a great escape just 2 hrs from the DFW metroplex!

This lodge is a great place for anyone who likes to be outdoors, especially for shooting sports and archery. The lodge is very secluded off the highway on a 11,000 acre ranch. You can enjoy sporting clays, 5 stand, wobble trap or archery targets. But we could have also hit the golf driving range, adult swimming pool, spa or zip line! We were limited on time and it was 105 degrees so we opted for a Mule drive through the ranch. It was great! The room was very spacious and comfortable. The restaurant was amazing! The food was top notch for dinner and breakfast. We were really impressed with everything from the friendly staff to the manicured environment that is rustic modern. Highly recommended for couples or families! Just bring your credit card...it's not cheap!

Room Tip: All rooms face the lake. But don't go in August...just too hot to enjoy it all.

Expensive, but Rough Creek gets everything right. Rooms (we had a suite) are top notch - beautiful, comfortable, and spacious. We had a slight issue with our shower draining a bit slow, but that was it. Very nice linens and bath robes.

Food was just outstanding, especially the evening meals. Breakfast buffet was extremely good - more than you'd ever ask for. Wait staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. Chef Gerard also made it a point drop by to say hello and ask how we like the food. They keep the menu simple and change it a little every few days. As a 1st course we had a wood grilled, heart of romaine lettuce that was fantastic. The food alone is worth the trip.

Lots of activities. There was more to do that we could fit into the 3 days we were there. Swimming pool, zip line, archery, ATV riding, rock climbing, fossil hunting, the kids ranch area (air hockey, table tennis, x-box, and more...), smores at the campfire in the evening - all were big hits with us. We did not get the time to use the fitness equipment, but it looked like top notch, late model equipment. We also didn't get to spend any time fishing, horseback riding, shooting or hunting, but we'd love to come back for that.

Wife and daughter were very happy with their spa treaments.

I must say that their staff and customer service was beyond compare. Their staff to guest ratio must be nearly 1:1, especially during the week. There are only maybe about 40 rooms and suites, so unless there is a big wedding or event, they are never too crowded. They are always around and willing to do whatever is needed to make your stay more enjoyable. They really pamper you. Rough Creek is a very special place.

Room Tip: Rooms are less expensive during the week

I'm still bowled over by the level of customer service I received while there. I've been to both Disney theme parks and have shopped at Nordstrom's (two very service oriented companies) and I can say that RCL has re-written the book on how to make somebody feel special. The experience made it worth every penny. My kids and I were blown away.

Room Tip: We chose one of the cabins (a short bike ride from the main lodge) and we loved it. Cozy and great...
