“Club Ten Impresses”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

If you are travelling without children and want the very best experience in Galveston, go with the Club Ten floor, which is an adult-only floor that offers the boutique hotel experience within the grand footprint of The San Luis. Everything from the lighting, furniture, fixtures, the TV built into the bathroom mirror... it's definitely upscale. A bottle of champagne greeted us in the room, and the staff treated us like we were celebrities throughout our entire stay. The complimentary bottled water, snacks, and breakfast were very much appreciated.

Dinner: The Steakhouse was an excellent choice for a romantic dinner. The escargot was fantastic - unlike any other we've tried. We were looking forward to the standard lemony garlic butter. These were actually served in a gravy, and it was simply delicious. The steaks were beautifully thick cuts, and they were cooked at just the right temperature, seasoned perfectly.

Overall, we enjoyed our experience and, without a doubt, this will be our place of choice for every visit to Galveston - but ONLY on the Club Ten floor.

The reason for the four stars instead of five - the obvious: the other floors and the lobby feel dated in decor - this could definitely be a five-star property with the the right aesthetic updates.

Room Tip: The Club Ten floor is worth the extra expense.

I live in Houston, and every year we spend a couple of weekends in Galveston. I've stayed in practically every hotel the city has to offer from the Strand District to the Seawall. My most recent trip we stayed at the San Luis again. I've had issues in the past with service, but there is no debating it is clearly the best overall hotel or resort in the city. Great location, fantastic water views, amazing restaurants, party atmosphere at the pool every night, knowledgeable concierge, comfortable upscale rooms and suites, first class spa and a very friendly staff. It is pricey, but worth it. On this trip we had one issue with service, but upper management immediately stepped in, apologized and corrected it, no excuses. If you're on vacation or feel like a local weekend getaway, you owe it to yourself to try the San Luis.

Room Tip: The higher the floor, the lower the volume from the pool area. Can get loud at night.

The San Luis Resort is a fun weekend getaway. We loved the pool area with the swim-up bar. The staff passed out cold towels, ice water, and frozen grapes to keep guests cool in the Texas heat. The room was nice and spacious, and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was extremely small with poor lighting, but it did not diminish our overall experience at the hotel. All of the staff was very friendly and helpful. We will be back!

June 2012 spent one night at the San Luis with two of our sons. My husband booked a cabana by the pool. The hotel needs a bigger pool!!!! The young lady who was our server for the cabana was very nice, professional, and I have no complaints with the service. I do think $300 is a bit much to ask for a cabana at a hotel in Galveston, but considering the crowds I enjoyed the cabana. The pool is too small for such a large hotel. The rooms had been redecorated since my last visit, and were nice. Sleep was hard to come by the night we stayed - between the noise from the pool (and we were on one of the top floors), and the AC unit it was hard to sleep. This was unfortunate as the next day we woke at 5:00am to go with our guide fishing.
I believe that the hotel is a nice choice for the younger crowd who will enjoy the H2O Poolside bar, late night hours of the pool, and location to the beach. But for my family it was not great and the $500+ we spent was not worth the money.

Thank you for your review. During the summer time, our pool can get crowded as we are usually fully booked. Reserving a cabana is one way to have some space to yourself- we hope you and your sons enjoyed it. I shared your feedback about the noise levels at H2o with our Management. If I can be of assistance, please email me at ehimes@ldry.com

I have stayed in the San Luis hotel previously and have always had good experiences. The most recent was 19 August thru 21. Quick easy check in, easy parking, great pool, good food, great views and nice guest rooms. i will stay here again and recommend it to friends.

Room Tip: Ask for a room above the 7th floor for a good view.

Each year I head to Galveston for a quick get away with the grandsons before school starts. We LOVE the pool, slide, hot tub and patio area built on an old military bunker overlooking the gulf. It is so relaxing to just take a summer read and let the kids have fun poolside. So many families, the kids have plenty of friends by the time we leave.

Each room has a view of the pool area and gulf. Try to stay on the higher floors. The beds are comfortable and the patio area is great for relaxing. The hotel is clean and the staff is so accommodating and friendly. It is a trip we look forward to just as a quick getaway each and every year.

Room Tip: Higher floor with gulf view.

This hotel is beautiful. It feels like you are in the Keys or Bahamas when you visit here. The staff are very friendly and a call down to the desk about our A/C running too hot was answered almost immediately by two very polite engineers who fixed the problem very quickly. The front desk staff were great even though we arrived at prime check in time and they were extremely busy. The main attraction of this hotel is the pool. And it is beautiful. Waitresses come up to you to allow you to order from your lounge chair and our waitress was excellent about catching out eye while we were in the pool to make sure we were still okay. However, the adult section of the pool was extremely rowdy (think middle aged parents on Spring Break) which is fine but I noticed all the families were huddled on the other end of the pool to allow for some distance. The drinks in the pool area were EXTREMELY weak. My husband ordered a Crown and Coke (a $10 drink) and we had to ask if there was any Crown in it at all. Ordered a second and specifically asked for a stronger drink, even telling the waitress to charge us for an extra shot if need be and we got the same result. So the drinks were a let down but overall the pool was great. You cannot beat the location of this hotel. It's across the street from the beach and you can walk to several restaurants from the hotel. I think it were priced $50-100 less a night it would be something we would return to regularly but as it is typically $300+ for a standard room on a Friday or Saturday night I do not think we will return.

Room Tip: We were directly across from the elevators on floor 9 (mid level room) and we didn't have ANY tr...
