“Best on The Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

Came down to the Island and stayed again at The San Luis. As usual as soon as we arrived my wife and I were greeted by Quinn, the Guest Services Director and his top of the line valet staff. They helped us with our luggage and to the reception desk where a nice young man that I remember from last year waited on us...his name was "Dav" I believe. Tommy the head Concierge made his way over to greet us and say that we have been missed since our last stay. Its nice the way the staff at such a busy resort always remembers us by name. As my wife and Tommy chatted about the iPad she had just gotten me. Dav checked me in with a smile and we were off to the well appointed room. I do love the face lift the resort has gotten and it seems that its now completed.
The hotel was filled this weekend but it was not a problem at all we, actually enjoyed the live bands by the pool and all the other special things that were planned. It was crowded down by the pool and H2O but not over crowded. We asked Simon (one of the managers, I think they are actually referred to as Directors) about a cabana and he immediately got one prepped for us and by the time we got back downstairs with our swim suits it was stocked and ready to go, complete with an ice chest, bottled water, fresh fruit, clean towels, it was a lil cold Saturday so he added some nice blankets...nice touch Sir. The pool was clean and the staff was courteous and speedy with our orders.
Later that night we had in room dining service and the food was served warm and fast. They forgot one item we had ordered but had it up to us within 5 minutes.
We have stayed at The san Luis many times and we have yet to have had a bad time or poor service...thats what always keeps us going back to this great resort

Thank you for your feedback. Our check-in time is 4pm and we do try our best to accommodate our guests for an early arrivals. We were at full occupancy when you stayed with us so were not able to allow an early check-in. With our hotel at capacity, it can take our Housekeeping Department several hours to clean 242 guest rooms; I do apologize for the inconvenience. If I can be of further assistance, please email me at ehimes@ldry.com

We stayed for 3 nights ending on July 4. We had few complaints. The only big downside was the small bathroom. It can't be any larger than 20 - 25 sq ft excluding the tub area. We had asked for a room with a larger bathroom as we got stuck with a small bathroom last year and were told by the front desk our room would have a larger bathroom. it didn't and when we called back to the front desk we were told no other rooms were available. The tv also kept changing channels on its own after 2-10 mins. but we weren't in the room long enough to bother with it.

The service was great. The last several years we have had problems with the front desk service but this year they were fine. Maid service was prompt as was valet service. The grounds are immacualte, always have been. The rooms were clean. Security at the pool area has really improved from our previous stays. They were fairly prompt in escorting annoying drunks, of which there were few, from the pool area. We had no reservations about having our kids at the pool with us. The shuttle to and from Pleasure Pier was on time and hassle-free.

We have stayed at the San Luis well over 10 times in the last 15+ yrs and had seen a slow decline in the last few years, to the point we were looking for other resorts to visit. However, at least on this trip, they seem to be turning the corner and working toward being the resort that first attracted us there many years ago. We'll be back.

Room Tip: Ask for a large bathroom.

Thank you for your feedback. We're pleased to say that this fall our bathrooms will under a remodel, providing more space for our guests. I do apologize for the tv changing channels automatically- I have shared your feedback with Engineering to look into this issue. Thank you for your positive comments about your experience with Housekeeping, Security, Valet and our Front Desk staff. If I can be of further assistance, please email me at ehimes@ldry.com

I have been going to the San Luis since I was a teenager, and I am still pleased to bring family and friends here. We stayed the night of July 3rd and were told that even after checking out we could stay by the pool til 4, which was great because I had a spa appointment at 1. The spa is my favorite anywhere, with a luscious coco-mango signature treatment set and a thoroughly relaxing waiting area ("meditation room") for before and after with complimentary tea, wine or cucumber-infused water. The pool *was* overrun as far as seating goes, but the water itself was not so crowded. Just do as another patron said and get down early to claim your spot with a towel. The fun thing was, though, that it's open til 2:30am, so we took the kids down to swim after dinner the night of our arrival and let them play in the fairly empty pool. The staff was extremely courteous to me, even when my husband's bank card was declined at check-in (the magnetic stripe had worn off - we used mine and it went through). They were kind and not condescending or aloof. Even every bellhop we ran into was friendly. There were mostly families and couples that we saw, although many kinds of people could be found at the bar area after dark. They were minding their own business, though, and I wasn't bothered at all. We were all there to have a good time, right? No problems!

This is a beautiful, fun, very clean, nice property with wonderful bay views. I stayed next door on my first night in Galveston. And when I went to dinner here at San Luis, at the very nice Steak House I asked the clerk at the desk if they could match my rate at the very limited and not nearly as nice property next door. And they did!!!! The pool with the swim up bar is wonderful. Bay view from 14th floor- awesome!

Will definately stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a higer floor room. Better views of the bay and bird watching.

Great hotel!!! Love the quality & polite service. Piano bar is super---go Angelo!!! We have stayed before and will again.

We enjoy the pool and H2O Bar---but I wish they would play better music at night----Jimmy Buffet, Beach Boys, Zac Brown, Alan Jackson, etc. We on the beach, stop the boom boom stuff and play some beach music!!!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

We stayed in mid-June and had a very time. I read a previous review that sums it up well. For Galveston, this is one of the nicest places to stay.

Positives:
- Nice property, well maintained, beautiful grounds
- Lobby has a very upscale feel
- Rooms are very spacious, much larger than most hotel rooms
- We noted how clean the rooms were. Housekeeping does an excellent job
- We had the breakfast bufftet several times, and food by the pool daily. All of the food was very good. We did not eat at their nice restaurant.
- Hotel staff were very accomodating and friendly. Including the engineer that had to come to the room to reset the alarm clock. He brought a box of chocolates. The pool attendants were excellent as well as the cafe' staff. Front desk staff were very nice, but a little more reserved. Not a complaint, just an observation.
- From what we observed, every room has a view of the ocean with a balcony.
- We had a higher floor, which was nice
- Beach is just across the street, so it's a nice location if the ocean is your thing
- We always felt safe and secure due to the intensive security at the property

Opportunity:
- The number one opportunity at this property is the swimming pool. Prepare yourself, this is not a lay by the pool and read kind of place. It's a party pool. The pool appears to be fairly small, but feels larger once you get in it. The pool and the surrounding area are very crowded. We never had trouble finding the spot that we wanted, but we did get to the pool by 10 a.m. every morning. Those coming later in the day had a little more trouble. There is no shade.....none....repeat, none. And the music is blaring all day long. If the volume wasn't bad enough, the song selections made it all the worse....unless you like hip hop music blasting your face off for 12 hours in the scorching Texas sun. Even the young people in our group grew weary of it. You will notice a lot of security around the pool. We saw them in action several times. It's a rowdy place due to the excessive drinking going on at the pool bar. If you are considering a familiy trip here, you will probably have a nice time at the pool, as we did. The kids loved the water slide. Just be forewarned about what to expect.
- Cabanas around the pool can be rented for $400 per day. We noted that they were not all taken each day. Seems they should drop the price just a bit to fill them up.

Advice:
- Don't arrive prior to check-in time and expect to get your room. It's likely that your room will not be ready even at check-in time. We got in our room at 4:30 vs. the 4: p.m. check-in time. It was a little inconvenient, but you just need to roll with the flow on things like this. No point in getting all stressed out on the first day of your vaction.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views and are more removed from pool music.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and leaving feedback about your vacation. During the weekends, our pool is quite popular, just as you reference. The safety of our guests is top priority, so you probably did see our Security team throughout our 32-acre Resort. We do apologize in the delay of check-in- as we run near 100% occupancy throughout the summer months, we do try our best to clean each room and have them available for the next guest in a very short window. If I can be of further assistance, please email me at ehimes@ldry.com.
