3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

This was a last minute trip to find some warm summer sun. College daughter had a few days off in a row and we both wanted to find some warm sunshine. Weather apps told us Houston was hot and Galveston Island not far away. We searched on line for a nice hotel with a pool for relaxing and close to the water. The pictures made this Baymont hotel fit the bill. Now the pricing was a little crazy, first night $240 and the second night $85... Upon arrival we immediately asked was there another pool, like the one in the pictures? The front desk told us it was a tricky camera angle. Now the pool was the size of two king size beds and it was full of whole families in their clothes. I think I witnessed the Super 8 hotel next door coming and going from this pool as well. It was not what we were expecting.

The room was clean but I did call maintenance to check our AC. Someone came and immediately determined the whole wall unit needed to be replaced (I feel bad for the previous occupant). It was a quick exchange and we were only uncomfortable for a couple hours. The next day we explored the available beach options. The beach closest to the Baymont was not as well manicured as further north along the seawall. We parked for free on a side street close to the Pleasure Pier and found the beach clean and rented two chairs and an umbrella for $10.00 from a full time attendant. Later that day we walked from the Baymont a couple of blocks and found a wonderful mexican restaurant with TV's and our Blackhawks playing. It was a very good meal and while I can't remember the name it is the only one around 61st Street.

The next day we checked our pool option again and all I can say is horrible. Floating cigarette butts, beer cans and who knows what the film on the surface was made from... I went to the front desk and was told the pool gets clean between 11am - 1pm. I said I didn't find this fair as that eliminates any swimming before check out. I asked someone come look at it because it was scary. A maintenance person did come look as we were sitting poolside soaking up the sun. Someone else showed up within minutes and started cleaning the pool. Perhaps the condition of the pool was not normal but I still say the pictures should not be deceiving.

It is very hard to find the entrance. The hotel should make give clear directions upon booking a room. The staff was always very friendly. I only took a look at the 'free breakfast' on one of the two mornings. Personally, based on the groups in the dining area there was not going to be enough food to go around. McDonald's is a block away.

Room Tip: I asked for the top floor and never heard anything from the outside or the hallway.

The hotel was tacked behind Golden Corral. Still accessible from everything but as far as the view? an old ran down cemetery. We were placed on 2nd floor which I could have picked the 3rd floor- silly me. Heard every foot steps upstairs. The picture shows a large swimming pool- not as small as your room with jacuzzi. The towels- they were saving softeners I guess, its rough as sand paper. Bring your towels if you don't want scratched skin LOL. The bed squick!

Room Tip: Go somewhere else, or pick the top floor.

The cemetery which you are referring to is a historical landmark, the first African American cemetery allowed in Galveston Island, as far as the "bulls fighting" if you wanted the third floor we would have accomadated you if let us know. Sorry to hear that your stay was less than satisfactory, we hope to get another chance to better serve you in the future. But thank you for all the comments and helpful tips you have provided.
