“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights in July. Peak season, so it was busy, especially the Saturday we were there. The front desk clerks were nice, efficient and knowledgeable about the area. The elevator was slow, but it served the purpose and made for fun races between my boyfriend and I (me on the elevator, him on the stairs). The room was very clean and had a view of the beach from the balcony. It is within walking distance of the beach and you only have to cross the street to get to the seawall. It is close to the red light at 61st Street, so it is easy to maneuver around town and still be able to find your hotel. It is within a 5-10 minute driving distance from attractions such as Moody Gardens and the Strand. The continental breakfast was good - cereal, toast, boiled eggs, breakfast sausage, juice, fruit, yogurt, pastries and a fun waffle maker. The area was clean and well-stocked. The indoor swimming pool seemed small, but we didn't use it, so I can't really comment on that. All in all, I think it was a great room and I would recommend it. The cost was a little pricey, but it is summer and ALL of the hotels are pricey during this time. For the location and easy access, I think it was worth it.

Rooms not clean! Smells old wet carpet. Airconditions blow the reverse output onto balacony which makes it HOT as all heck!
Fire alarm went off little after midnight, told a child pulled on it, and all was well by desk clerk, however smoke filling up pool room. UNBELIEVABLE!! Hard to believe when fire truck pulled up and firemen ran back to truck for axe, fire extingusher, and tools...We checked out at 1AM and told that was silly, and told HA! GOOD LUCK finding a room on the Island! Never will stay there again!! The Hiltion was full and even though we were not even guest and they tried to find us a room. Kudos to the Hilton :) for being a good neighbor on the Island. Pool is not safe and although indoors, open to public, door card reader doesn't work so door lock blocked open. Non Guest come and go at will. Stairway requires NO card swipe and ppl come and go who are NOT guest. Hot Tub slimmy and nasty. Not worth it..spend the extra 20 to 40 bucks and get yourself a cleaner room with trained staff in case of Emergency. Pictures on site are not a true picture of hotel.

In all my 37 years in the industry, I have never had a guest complain that the a/c blows out..ALL a/cs blow out. It would be a problem to blow to hot air IN. As for the fire incident, the Galveston Fire Marshall said everything went as it should have. What the guest is describing is wrong. The desk clerk saw a man coming back in as others were exiting as they should. She told him he needed to go back out, and he told her it was just a kid pulling the alarm. The clerk told him it may have been, but until we are sure, he had to go back out and let the fire department check it out. It turned out to be a bad ballast on a light, and it melted down causing smoke in the underground, no one was in danger. Clerk never told guest it was a kid that pulled the alarm. I gave this guest a refund myself while there, and she would not stop yelling at clerk. We did nothing wrong, and the system worked as it should have per the fire department. This was a pressure situation, and the clerk handled it very well, and kept her cool...despite this unreasonable guest. Thank you, James Marx, GM.

Our room smelled of mildew, the carpet was wet from the refrigerator, the bathroom floor was filthy and had hair all over it, the coffee pot was slimy inside, one of the elevators was broken the entire time, the elevators were filthy and had the same garbage in them for our entire stay, and the breakfast was only waffles, juice, coffee, milk, cereal, sausage, apples, danish (prepackaged plastic tasting), boiled eggs and yogurt. Not exactly as the pictures detailed. For only $20 more a night you can find at least 4 other cleaner and nicer hotels. Look at the ones near Paradise Pier and Murdoch's on the Seawall. Also, we did complain on our first day there and was told the hotel was booked solid. At checkout, I again complained and the gal said that I should have called the front desk because they would have moved us. WHAT!?!? Rediculous. Also, the pool is basically in the basement and open to the parking lot and whoever wants to walk in can. No security at all and was tiny. Again, the pictures don't draw a clear picture.

We were allowed an early check in, with no hassle. My husband requested a 5th floor room on the side that would be facing the nights fire works display. We had room 521 and it was really a great view. So worth it, especially when we saw all the traffic involved, for those seeking a spot on the Sea Wall. There is a Mexican resturant, "Tortuga", practically in the same parking lot. Very good and very convenient. They do orders for pick-up, and we ate in our room. The pool was small and indoors, which made the sounds seem louder and it was quite humid. Elevator is slow, but functional. Breakfast was only fair, as the sausage was still cold, and there was a line to make waffles. On a less crowded day it's probably much nicer. Bed was a little lumpy, and seemed to have a "starboard list", but everything was very clean and smelled nice. Would definitely return!!

The price was reasonable but only because it was off-time (Sunday and Monday). Front desk clerk was accomodating but we could not get key until after check-in time as housekeeping was running behind. Room was on top floor so it was a decent view beyond the McD's just below. The elevator situation is marginal at best. We only used the elevator upon arrival and it was quite scary so we used the stairs the remainder of the trip and we were on the top floor. Our last day elevator was completely shut down which was probably a good thing. The breakfast looked good but it was packed and by the time we could get to the food, much of it was gone. We ate at Denny's instead. Last day we had breakfast and it was good. Hallways / stairwells not very clean but room was clean and comfortable. Balcony very small, but useable. AC ran all night. Parking is not ideal but do-able. Pool area looked un-inviting so we never used. With some upgrades would likely be a good place to stay. Suggestion - remove bedspreads and use runners on the end of the bed. Much cleaner option. Housekeeping did a great job, plenty of towels etc.

Room Tip: If you don't mind using the stairs, opt for the upper room. Much nicer views than the local res...

The staff here is exceptional! They are always so professional and very friendly.
The rooms are average in size with balconies that are small but yet you can see the Gulf. Great location!! Of course we will stay here again and again.

This is the second time I have stayed in the hotel, the staff is always very friendly. The issue with this time is the cost and maintenance of the hotel. Last time we went it was on an off peak day and the hotel was a great value. This time we went on 4th of July week and they raised prices to about $200 per night. The issue is the elevator was constantly not working, so we had to take the stairs. The microwave in the rooms did not work (in fact we tried to cook popcorn and it never would pop and when it did it burned it - so we had the joy of burned popcorn smell the rest of the night). I would stay at the hotel again, but would not pay more than $100 per night ever!! There are better places for the cost we paid this time.

Room Tip: If you are going to stay here get a room that is closest to the ocean - it will have a window that v...

We apologize that one of the two elevators had stopped working for a few hours, but mechanical issues are always going to happen no matter where you you stay, and regardless of the rates. The rates are higher at the beach on 4th of July and on weekends. This is when beach hotels make money, in the winter, people are less apt to come to the beach, and most of the hotels lose money. This is true of every beach hotel in the country. The microwave works, we checked it, but popcorn has to have room to expand and hotel microwaves have a tendency to be smaller than what most guests have in their homes. We appreciate your having stayed with us multiple times, and we certainly hope to see you again. Please call me if you decide to return, and I will make sure you get a nice discount for your troubles. Sincerely, James Marx, General Manager
