In my opinion the property is very run down. Peeling wallpaper, moldy shower curtains, carpet that hadn't been vacumed, etc. The list goes on. Check the user submitted photos for proof. I don't see how the prices can be justified. I had high expectations going into this place, given the price and the mostly glowing reviews, what I got was a run down old house that hasn't been given the attention it needs. It should also be mentioned that the neighborhood is pretty sketchy around the place even though it's on the beach. I'm a pretty experienced traveler and I was a heartbeat away from just demanding my money back the second I walked into the room, it was that bad. The only Positive of my stay was the food. Breakfast was very good and it was the only highlight of my stay. Perhaps if it was priced like a hostel it would be appropriate, I believe you get what you pay for, but this was not what I paid for.

Although I visited in late spring Galveston is still in REALLY bad shape. Like don't come back for five years shape. There is very little open and in working order. Everyone is nice but it's a long way from being any kind of legitimate tourist destination again.

We came for the Mardi Gras and stayed in the European Suite. It is located above the garage in the backyard, it’s old and the construction lacks attention to detail, but it is also roomy, clean and the double Jacuzzi tub was nice (although you have to get in to turn the tap on – an inconvenience).

We became good friends with other guests making the Mardi Gras much more fun to attend. One couple stayed in the South Pacific room and I noticed it had better construction and a more cozy feel. Another couple stayed in the Safari room. It didn't have a nice feel when we visited them and It had a moldy odor. We speculated there may have been a water leak so this may eventually be fixed. I would personally recommend staying in the main house (ie; the South Pacific or Sunshine room) with the European Suite being a good choice for more privacy.

Breakfasts were amazing. It was like eating out at some $$$$$ restaurant in a romantic European country. Soft music, great food, lovely décor and being treated like royalty.

The location is excellent for the Mardi Gras, only a block off the parade route and a dozen blocks from downtown. Bikes were provided and we made good use of them. The neighborhood is a mix of run down homes and very elegant homes.

Galveston is an interesting town to visit. The economy is depressed and it shows in the run down homes but we never felt unsafe. I recommend having a car to get around. The drive down the seafront is beautiful (f it’s not foggy) and a trip on the ferry is worth the fee (free). Moody Gardens is also worth the time to visit.

  • Liked — Hosts, friends we made, location, breakfasts
  • Disliked — Room - elegant but construction details sloppy and unmaintainted.

Staying at the Avenue O Bed and Breakfast was a fantastic experience! The room was cozy and inviting, and the Porters were extremely welcoming. Breakfast was wonderful, and the homemade cookies were a consummate treat! The backyard is lush, full of beautiful plants and flowers, and replete with places to sit, unwind, and enjoy the ambience.
Because the Porters gave me the use of one of their bikes, I was able to to take rides all over Galveston, exploring areas of interest and transporting myself back and forth from a local conference I was attending. I couldn't have asked for a better home base than the Avenue O B&B!

What a treat from the normal Victorian Mansion B&B's! I'm always hunting for something out of the ordinary and I wish that more places would follow this innkeeper's lead. Each room is themed and takes you into a romatinc setting. I love that only one room is in the main house and the other two are seperate and set back in the yard. I recommend the European suite, but the guests in the other two rooms swore their's was the best. Breakfast is served in a rose colored dining room that just screams romantic with out using floral wall paper. The food is terrific and changed each day between sweet and savory. I'll be back.

Connie was fabulous!!! She was the epitome of warm and welcoming! My husband and I decided to spend the day and night in Galveston, away from the hustle and bustle of Houston, to spend some time alone for our anniversary. I found Avenue O online, and then found out a friend of mine stayed there, and loved it! I highly reccommend this place, if you're looking for a B&B experience. It's also located very close to The Strand!
