“Beautiful house/grumpy docent”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013 via mobile

My son and I went to the Bishops Palace during our spring break vacation. The house is an architectural wonder. No expense was spared when this home was built and anyone who appreciates fine craftsmanship will enjoy their visit. My only complaint was with an older gentleman who was acting as a docent. This man wasn't content unless he was griping at some poor unsuspecting guest. He chewed out some poor family because they didn't stomp hard enough on the entry hallway carpeting to get any dust particles off of their feet. I believe the man had some word of complaint to every single person I saw making the tour. I think the Galveston Historical Foundation would be well served by spending a few bucks and getting this man some basic training in people skills. The house was magnificent-the crotchety host ruined the experience.

“A must see!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

This attraction is full of history and Barbara is an excellent docent. She was extremely knowledable. I only wish we had more time so that we could see the other 2 floors! The cost is $10 per adult and worth every penny. The true boomer is that you are not allowed to take photos inside the home.

“Bishops Palace”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

Actually the Bishop's Palace was built for Walter Gresham a local attorney around the late 1800's and was designed by the famous architect Nicholas Clayton. It wasn't until the 1920's that the castle was sold and purchased by the diocese for the Bishop. That being said the castle is a magnificent structure that has literally withstood the test of time. Anyone interested in the classic houses of the late Victorian era should visit this place especially so because of the architect responsible for its design. Go through the rooms and imagine what it was like to live there. You will not be disappointed with your tour.

“Ah yes, the good old days!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

A very big house which is nearly the same as it was at the turn of the 19th. century. It appeared to be in great shape thanks to quality construction, unlike today, and a penchant for magnificence.

“Bishop's Palace...wedding”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

Historic. Great for pictures. Not so good for bathrooms. I went to a wedding there and the food served was good. It is amazing that it has survived all these years and through hurricanes. The wedding pictures were amazing! If you are a history buff you will probably like this building...also art students will like it. It is centrally located. Available for weddings.
