“Good for our family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2012

Our family of 7 stayed in two very nice rooms across from one another for one night, December 26th. Good location, good breakfast and staff helpful. Our only disappointment was the pool was not heated and the hot tub was only warm with hot water coming through the jets for a short time about every 15 minutes.

Great job, nice breakfast, & fantastic shuttle service to the Carnival cruise port. Complimentary breakfast was delicious!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2011

We stayed three nights from Friday through Sunday, December 2011 to attend Dickens on the Strand.
The good:
good location, near the beach. Easy to find, more or less center of restaurant row. Fast check in and out. The room was very clean, the housekeeping staff very nice and very efficient. We had a balcony facing the beach, please realize NOT all of the rooms will have beach balconies. Also note, the rooms facing the beach are on the BAR side of the hotel so plan on experiencing some noise.

The adequate:
Breakfast was adequate, but not great. Smallish muffins, etc. This would be better if there was a microwave available to heat up pastries. There is a toaster for bagels and toast, but in our case, we prepared a plate and carried our food up to our room to prepare.
The dining area is smallish and filled up fast. The other reason we carried our food upstairs was, no seats were available.
Lastly, processed chicken patties served as the meat for two days straight. Neither of us really like heavily processed chicken patties under the best of circumstances, but for breakfast two days in a row, I dropped the rating one star.

The bad:
We were there in winter on the fourth floor. It was cold outside, no one wanted to outdoors. As a result, we only heard a few door slams from the bar out front on Saturday night. Annoying but not bad. I imagine this would be a very different situation in the summer, I suspect the noise from people outside would be quite annoying for longer period of time.
However, while watching TV on Sunday evening, we noticed a rather large roach crawling down from the ceiling toward the floor. My husband rolled up the newspaper and killed it. Maybe from the folks upstairs, but still.. yuck... we travel constantly, I've never seen a roach in another hotel. Deducting one star for this as well.

Room Tip: Ask for the side AWAY from the beach. That side does not have a bar under the windows.

We have stayed at this hotel twice in the past year and have enjoyed them both times! The staff is very courteous and helpful. Breakfest buffet is very good and the views from the blacony is better than we could ever expect.

I was very impressed with the service from the front desk and promptness performed, the room was very clean loved smell of newness and the bed sleep very well. view was nice and the breakfast was amazing and service impressive. The desk clerk I turned keys into Dee was very friendly and professional. I would recommend this stay to anyone going to Galveston.

Very good hotel! My wife, and I spent two days and nights and were very happy with the room, and the rate. The service was out standing. God willing, we will stay with them again on our next trip.

Room Tip: Best view of the Ocean is on the upper flours south west side

We booked a room here for our family beach weekend and found the hotel a mixed bag of positives and negatives.

Positives:
-Location is 1 block to the beach, yet away from the main strand with noise and crowds (Vendors on beach rented umbrellas & chairs, so no need to haul your own)
-1 bedroom suite allowed kids to sleep in living room (pull-out couch & our pack-&-play), while adults could relax in the bedroom area or on the balcony
-beds and pillows were very comfy
-microwave, small fridge, and coffee maker
-AM desk clerk was friendly and tried to get us room before official check-in time (3pm), so baby could nap
-parking was easy
-self-serve buffet breakfast was included in rate. Options were cereal, fruit, bread/toast, danish, waffles, biscuits & gravy, juices, tea, & coffee. TIP: get there early, dining room was small and got packed by 8am (the hot food wasn't set up on time, but we made due with the cold stuff until the hot was ready)

Negatives:
-PM desk clerk was snotty. When I came to check if room might be ready (that AM girl said she'd try for), she replied, "as I explained before, check-in is 3pm" Yes, I know; but I also know that all the rooms don't magically become clean at 2:59, and if one was available, it sure would have been nice to put the baby down, instead of sitting in your lobby listening to him fuss because he's so tired.
-Fridge did not keep food cold enough, so I had to throw out all the meat and cheese we brought for sandwiches
-Shower had horrible water pressure
-Toilet had a gross stain on the seat
-One of the chairs on the balcony was broken
-Houses behind the hotel are a little sketchy, but we didn't have any problems
-No place to rinse off feet before coming back to hotel from beach
-Rate ($239 + 18% tax) seemed high. $180 would have made me feel better about the whole experience

Overall, the hotel was good for what our priorities were: close to kid-friendly beach, large room, fridge, breakfast. The stay wasn't great, but, we will probably stay here again, simply because it has what we need and we can deal with the annoyances. I will just keep an eye on the rates to get a good deal.

Room Tip: both sides have beach view, but floors 4 & 5 are quieter and little better view
