Nice quiet park - not too much activity but a good place to go to for a nice walk. you can go for a kayak ride or just sit by the beach.

“Great State Park on the Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2014

I camped here this weekend with my son's Boy Scout troop and we all had a great time. It is clear they are making nice progress recovering from Hurricane Ike. We camped on the bay side and particularly enjoyed the brand new, air conditioned bathroom. The campsites were spacious and grassy. There were wooden bins at each site to store food in and these were new as well. The beach has showers and dressing rooms. The bay side features kayaking, which I would like to come back for sometime. Contrary to many reviews I have read, I found the staff to be friendly and accommodating.

“A Hidden Jewel For All!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2014

Tucked away on the West End, unobtrusively, is a small State Park. Until you enter the grounds, you may not even be aware of it. On the Bay Side there is kayaking, a Discovery Center, hiking, then cross over to the Gulf Side and there you have a totally different experience! Both sides of the Park are a must experience! Birds galore, shelling,, hiking, crabbing, kayaking OR just sitting on the beach or at a shaded picnic table! There are also RV and camp sites available. Quiet and totally enchanting! There is an activity for everyone in your group, whether action-oriented or a quiet read of your beach book!

“Very Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2014

We had been wanting to go back to Galveston Island State Park for a few years. We've been there 5 or 6 times before and really enjoyed it. But this time was very disappointing, in fact we left two days early even though we had already paid for our camping space. First of all, since the hurricane, the surf is very shallow for a LONG ways out into the gulf. This seems to cause the sand to be churned up a lot more than it used to be, and the water is very dirty/sandy (not even close to clear like in Ala. & Flor.) Plus there was a TREMENDOUS amount of seaweed on the beach. Disgusting. It was difficult to get to the water without walking thru lots of seaweed. The restaurants along the seawall are over-priced with just marginal food quality. (in my opinion). Our nephew got stung by a moon jellyfish and didn't want to get back in the water. Water was so dingy you couldn't them until it was too late. When the wind died down after our third day there, the bugs and mosquitoes were terrible. We've pretty much checked this beach destination off our list. We'll go to Florida or Alabama next time. Highlight of our trip was seeing other campers catch a couple sharks when they wre fishing. Small ones, only 2 feet or so long. One was a hammerhead!

“Great campground!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2014

I return to this campground every year for vacation. The rates are cheap, park is clean & the staff were all super nice. It stays booked in the summer so make your reservations as far in advance as possible. The only problems I had at this park during my stay were the tent campers practically set up camp inside the new bayside restrooms. Then one day while my family was swimming at the beach, a woman came into the water 10 feet from my children with a fishing pole. I wasn't happy with that at all. There should be specific "swim only" and "fish only" areas so swimmers aren't getting hooked or chummed.........
