“beautiful and historic”

They were still rebuilding alot so there weren't as many places to go as usual but it was still cool. We shopped for a couple of hours and enjoyed ourselves.

“Can't wait till the Strand is up and Running again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2008

Our family is so sorry to see what Ike has done to a great city, that is so rich in history.

We are glad to hear everyone is working hard to open their shops back up. Can't wait for Old Strand Emporium, Yagas, Front Palor.

The Strand is my favorite spot just to hang out and have a few beers.

God Bless Galveston

“Potential Unrealized”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2008

You'd like to make this a destination for after-the-beach activity, but you can't because everything is closed by 5 PM. The idea was right, restoring old and historical buildings, and turning around an old downtown, making it an inviting tourist attraction. Here are a couple of examples for why the potential hasn't been realized.
We thought we should see the "Great Hurricane" show at 4:04 PM, but the ticket seller abruptly said "sorry, no late admissions, next show is in an hour." She could have suggested the Jean Laffitte Pirate movie, but I guess didn't think of it. She then didn't even have the decency to validate my parking lot ticket ($15!).
We then tried to visit the train museum but at 4:40, the attendent said she was closing in 10 minutes. Even browsing the lobby was frowned upon.
Thus, the Strand, which could have been an enjoyable place to hang out on a cloudy day, became a poor example of public relations. If they want the downtown to become an attraction, they need to teach the residents who work there, how to treat tourists who may want to return at an earlier hour to enjoy what they have to offer. And merchants should be more concerned with doing business, instead of closing up shop at a time when visitors are looking for things to do.

“Better get there early”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2008

The Historic Area and shopping closes down pretty early, so you might want to do it before 5pm. We got there early enough to be the last people served at La King's Ice Cream Parlor before they closed at 6pm. Very cute place where they make their own ice cream and are happy to let you sample every flavor you'd like. They also have a chocolate/candy counter, but we didn't get anything from there.
We then proceeded down what they call "The Strand" and were the last people in of the 3 shops. There were 2 or 3 that stayed open later. We didn't eat in the neighborhood, but there are restaurants around.
