“Very comfortable hotel to stay on Galveston”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2009

My girlfriend and I were looking for a nice get away with a hot tub located in the room and found this gem. The room was very comfortable, clean, the hot tub was spectacular although the bubbles did not work on one side (not even an annoyance). Moody's staff have always been great, very courteous. This happened to be the night that the hotel grounds was hosting a prom for a local high school and we did not hear a thing. The pool and swim up bar was fantastic and parking is ample. I look forward to my next get away to Moody Gardens.

My husband and I stayed for two nights. The first room we were given had no hot water and the beds were just awful. Very noisy hallways and hotel doors slam loudly. We were moved to another room which also had cheap beds and a broken toilet seat. Sheets were of poor quality, no blankets and the bed spreads were not clean. For the price you pay, this hotel does not offer a good value and the distance to the Strand/downtown Galveston takes a good twenty minutes with lots of red lights. Much better places to stay in Galveston for much less money.

After a 30 minutes stint at the Hampton Inn (please see my review), I found the Moody Gardens Hotel. This hotel is VERY well managed and a real treat. The frontdesk staff was professional and courteous. The check in was excellent. The rooms are big with an oversized window overlooking the island. The bed was extremely comfortable and the A/C was quiet.
The hotel bar is located on the 9th floor with beautiful views of the bayou during sunset. The bar is very elegant and has a piano player at night.
I usually do not believe in hotel restaurants but I would highly recommend the food at the Moody. The restaurant is also located on the 9th floor and a very proper venue with excellent food.

The hotel is facing the bayou and therefore far from the seawall and the beach. Yet, the hotel has a very nice pool area.

  • Liked — The hotel restaurant and bar on the 9th floor
  • Disliked — the location

Located on Galveston Island in Texas, Moody Gardens is one the most luxurious facilities to survive Hurricane Ike. I will start by stating that not everything on the island is back to normal, and the same goes for Moody Gardens. A few attractions will not be open until next year such as the rain forest. That being mentioned the hotel is practically back to normal. Most of the trees have survived the salt water but the once lush green foliage in the under growth has been browned by the gallons of salt water that Ike deposited.

The Hotel lobby and hallways are like new and exactly what you expect in a 4 star operation. The holidays have the crew at Moody Gardens decorating for Christmas. I don't mean a few lights either- we are talking some serious light displays that look fantastic while taking a casual stroll outside. It is scaled back a little from years past, I'm told because they lost a lot of the plants that they used to use for the displays (IKE) The staff is professional- I believe many of them have worked in larger, more established chains because you just don't find great help in Galveston County. The Hotel has many options for food if you choose to stay on premises and fresh seafood, although a little pricey ($16 for 6 jumbo shrimp) is delightfully tasty. Rooms are nicely furnished with HD TV's and even some premium cable channels. Moody Gardens has one of the neatest pools on the island complete with a bar and real live trees in the pool! Though the rain forest is currently closed the Penguin exhibit along with the IMAX and 4d theaters are operating as per normal.

I will say that the weekend I was there the valet service was a little slow. Part of the problem was a high maintenance family was checking in at the time I was trying to leave. The phone rang and rang, longer than any valet phone, at least for me. I ended up waling to the desk and that's when I discovered that one family was screwing it up for the whole hotel. That was forgiveable and I went on to enjoy the weekend in Galveston. The room rate was posted at 299 per night, but it is possible to get in much lower than that right now. I would reccomend this hotel for families and couple. The families will benefit from all the activities (penguins? who doesn't love those!) and couple will find that there are planty of places to walk and be alone, hand in hand, until it is time to retreat to the room where the pillow top mattresses and well insulted walls will no doubt make for a memorable visit. The only things keeping my review above the highest are the fact that Hurricane Ike managed to take away a lot of the Galveston soul and the few attractions that are now closed.

  • Liked — Delicious food
  • Disliked — closed rainforest- but it will open again!

I actually really liked this hotel. They have good rooms, good food, and it's close to some major attractions. I don't know how it fared aganist Hurricane Ike, but if it is still running, it's definintly worth staying at.

  • Liked — Close to several attractions
  • Disliked — Dont know what Hurricane Ike did to it.

Well we only paid 150.00 for our room, so needless to say no view. We took our 2 boys aged 12& 14. We did like the pool with the swim up bar. I was surprised to see when I went out on the balcony there was mildew all over the outside of the door, kinda gross.. Bathroom was average no better. Bedspread had a cigerette burn mark in it. My main complaint would be that when we were checked in we were not given directions to the room. This is a big and confusing place.. Because we were in the tower we had to take one elevator up then walk to the other elevator and take it down a levil.. A map of the resort would have been nice.
Grounds were very nice, pool was very nice. And compared to the other hotes in the area we feel like we got a good deal for 150.00, I would have been upset had I spent any more.
Nice Family location and I would stay again.
