“Not a place to sleep late or relax in your room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2014

Beautiful lobby and great curb appeal. Pool area looks nice. Overnight front desk not the most friendly. It's a great location in the Gulf and a block from the Pleasure Pier.

When renovations are done this will be the place to be. Right now it's only great if you leave your room from 8am to 8pm while they're using jackhammers and drills to keep you alert. I spent 4 days in Houston and 4 days here expecting my houston portion would be fast paced and my Galvez portion would be relaxing. It was the opposite. Royal Sonesta in Houston (which was also under construction) insulated guests from the disruptions. At the Galvez it's front and center.

Try to get a high floor with Gulf view... Maybe that'll help a little.

Please accept our sincere apologies regarding the noise from the construction on our rear entrance. The good news is that we are done with the jackhammers and work is underway to improve the restaurant entrance located on Bernardo de Galvez Avenue. While we still encourage hotel guests to use our grand entrance on the beachfront, this rear entrance is convenient for our Galvez Bar & Grill customers who opt to self park in the adjacent lot.

My sister and I spent a night at the Hotel Galvez before New Years Eve to have a mini spa getaway. The architecture of the hotel is perhaps the most striking of all the hotels in Galveston. The hotel has an open feel with many areas to sit and relax in the lobby.

We paid for a city view room, but got a partial ocean view room, which was a nice surprise. The room is well decorated with some signs of wear and tear, but it doesn't take away from the charm. The lights in the room can be controlled by one box with buttons to turn all the lights on or off or just to turn on the reading lights in the room. There wasn’t a chest of drawers in our room though, so if you like to fold your clothes and put them away, you will either have to hang them all in the closet or be creative with the other nooks and crannies in the room. The room also had a small refrigerator and a safe, which was large enough to put a couple of laptops in. It was also a nice treat to have free Wi-Fi with the room.

As can be expected for a hotel of this age, the elevators are extremely slow. During our stay, one of the elevators was broken so we used the service elevator, which was very prompt and quick whenever we pressed the button, not surprisingly. Also, if you stay on the second floor, there are stairs that you can take to your room. This will bypass the need for the elevators. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant and it was average. It’s probably better to explore some of the local restaurants in Galveston.

The spa at the hotel is a real gem. There is a relaxation room where you can rest before and after your appointment and it is large enough to fit 12 people, so highly unlikely that you won’t get a space. The spa technicians are amazing and there are numerous body treatments and massages to choose from.

We didn't stay at Galvez but had an experience with the restaurant on Christmas Eve. I worked very hard to try & make a dinner rsvp (as I had read about it & saw a picture that didn't look anything like the dining room & saw in person later). Including marking on my calendar to call on Dec. 1 as had been told by them. Then they then told me to call catering, I left a specific message as to when we wanted to eat & they returned my call - apparently only sales & catering handled the Brunch, not the dinner reservations. So I had to call the restaurant again for dinner reservations & I will not say what I would like to say about who they have at the restaurant answering phones. Got bad info from them 3 times. Made a 7:30p rsvp. showed up at the restaurant & was told they don't serve at 7:30 (6:30 latest). And they never had a reservation for us. Ended up having a good meal at the bar at the San Luis Resort which is so much nicer than this property. They had a buffet dinner at San Luis which was unappealing but the bar had a nice ambience & good food & wait staff. Much much nicer than Galvez & would give them my business any time over there.

We appreciate you giving us a try for Christmas Eve. Please accept our apologies regarding the confusion on your reservation. As you know. we host a huge Christmas Day Brunch so our operator must have assumed that you were calling in regard to that brunch. Dinner reservations are typically taken directly by the restaurant or are also available via Open Table. Again, our sincere apologies.

The hotel is seriously under-elevatored, and the problem was far worse because one of the two elevators was out of service most of the time we were there.

Just as important for us, the lights in the room were so dim that it took a

Please accept our apologies for the issues that you mentioned in your review. We are happy to share that the issue with the elevators has been resolved. Also in regard to the lighting, the lamps can be adjusted. I'm sorry that our staff didn't explain. We hope that you will give us another chance in the future.
