Not ready for the weekend to end on a Sunday, and having mutually agreed to blow off Monday, my wife and I decided on a spur orf the moment road trip last Sunday to include an overnight getaway. Having never having been to Fredericksburg, the sensible thrifty side of me initially jumped online and scoped out the hotel chains to find a good room for under $100.
But when I noticed the great reviews of Baron's Creekside I figured we just had to check this place out. Even though I cringed a bit at $145, it seemed reasonable for what was advertised on their website . We were very surprised at what a romantic and cozy place this is, and absolutely worth the cost. The Swiss Interlachen is the room in the pics where we stayed, and it was fabulous.
There is a beautiful creek in front of the cottage, and the cat and small ducks are pretty friendly and sociable. Just be careful about stepping out barefoot, as I did not realize that ducks think toes are treats, and they had me hopping quickly back to the room. But it was all good natured and they did not hurt at all. If you bring them some bread crumbs they are happy campers.
I found Sunday is a good day to go to Fredericksburg if you only want to stay one night, because Baron's and a lot of other local B&B's require a minimum two night stay on 'weekends'. The town is also a little less crowded on Sunday afternoon.
At only an hour and a half from Austin, we were in Fredericksburg early Sunday afternoon. On Sunday key pickup is at a management office drop box a mile or two away which is easy.
After checking in at 3:00 we visited Wildseed Farms which was interesting. We then took a ride out to Enchanted Rock at 6pm and got a good workout climbing to the top. Excellent views from the top, by the way. After going back to the hotel and washing up, we went by the Auslander Biergarten for dinner and beers. Their draft beer and fried stuffed mushrooms were good. But next time we will probably try the Cabernet Grill Texas Wine Country Restaurant, which is supposed to be a great place for dinner.
After lounging around all morning and wandering around the creek and feeding the fishes until 11am checkout, we went by the National Museum of the Pacific War. I was really surprised by the size and quality of this museum, and it is up to par with the Smithsonian. You get a two day ticket, and you really need it if you are a WWII buff and want to take the time to take it all in.
By the time we got out of the museum we were starving, and I was craving BBQ. Found a place a few blocks away called Peach BBQ, but they had disappointingly run out of ribs. What kind of BBQ place runs out of ribs? It's not like they were packed busy...
Anyway, next time we go back to Fredericksburg (and of course Baron's) we decided we will make better use of their very nice whirlpool bathtub by bringing along some bubble bath, wine, and candles.... The room has a music player that you can connect your ipod, and also had a CD loaded with some mood music. But if you have your own romantic CD's or music on your ipod that would be much better.
All in all this past weekend was outstanding, and we would highly recommend Baron's Creekside!!
