We (with 3 kids aged 7, 9 and 11) wanted to spend a few days in the Fredericksburg area over the Thanksgiving break. We found a most divine cottage about 20 miles north of town. If you're looking for a tranquil place with beautiful surroundings, this is it.
The cottage itself is an historic building which has been lovingly updated and furnished. There are three bedrooms, two with double beds and one bunk room with four beds. The bunk room can be accessed through the one shared bathroom or through a side door. There is only one bathroom, which houses the bath, shower and a composting toilet (doesn't stink, just don't look down!). The den has a big TV and comfortable couches. In the dining room there is a long table which seats 8. The kitchen is well equipped with an electric oven and stove, microwave, fridge freezer and a Keurig coffee maker. The facilities are fine to cook and there is also a gas bbq outside. There is a lovely covered patio outside (yes, rocking chairs) with plenty of space for the kids to kick a ball around in the garden.
Breakfast is included and we had cereals and (enormous) muffins on day 1, breakfast tacos on day 2, a delicious coffee cake on day 3 and a breakfast casserole on day 4. The owner, Jane, prepares everything the evening before and puts it in the fridge, ready for you to eat (or heat up) in the morning.
The Indian Creek in front of the cottage is a super adventure ground for the kids and adults alike.
