“Glorious cottage at Erbstuck Ranch, Fredericksburg, Texas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

We (with 3 kids aged 7, 9 and 11) wanted to spend a few days in the Fredericksburg area over the Thanksgiving break. We found a most divine cottage about 20 miles north of town. If you're looking for a tranquil place with beautiful surroundings, this is it.

The cottage itself is an historic building which has been lovingly updated and furnished. There are three bedrooms, two with double beds and one bunk room with four beds. The bunk room can be accessed through the one shared bathroom or through a side door. There is only one bathroom, which houses the bath, shower and a composting toilet (doesn't stink, just don't look down!). The den has a big TV and comfortable couches. In the dining room there is a long table which seats 8. The kitchen is well equipped with an electric oven and stove, microwave, fridge freezer and a Keurig coffee maker. The facilities are fine to cook and there is also a gas bbq outside. There is a lovely covered patio outside (yes, rocking chairs) with plenty of space for the kids to kick a ball around in the garden.
Breakfast is included and we had cereals and (enormous) muffins on day 1, breakfast tacos on day 2, a delicious coffee cake on day 3 and a breakfast casserole on day 4. The owner, Jane, prepares everything the evening before and puts it in the fridge, ready for you to eat (or heat up) in the morning.
The Indian Creek in front of the cottage is a super adventure ground for the kids and adults alike.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Erbstuck homestead, a working ranch, now offers its completely restored log and rock home, circa 1850, to guests as a Hill Country getaway. We offer country serenity with a historical ambiance. Visitors can get a true glimpse of pioneer life while enjoying antiques, western decor, and a nice collection of western art. The owners, descendants of the original settlers, will be happy to share the history of the homestead if requested. Our Champion Angora goats, other livestock, wildlife (deer, birds, rabbits, fox and coyotes), and wide open spaces complete the Erbstuck experience. Located only twenty miles from Fredericksburg, this country setting is the perfect complement to a day in town. After enjoying shopping, dining, wine tours, etc. remove yourself from the hustle and bustle of the city to a quiet evening outside overlooking the seasonal creek behind the house, and later, unsurpassed star gazing. The house is rented as one unit, accommodating up to eight guests. The first bedroom has a king size bed, the second a queen, and the third two sets of bunk beds and has one large bathroom for the guests to share. It also has a fully stocked kitchen, a dining room with seating for eight, a living room with satellite TV and a working fireplace, and a cool back porch with rocking chairs. The nightly rate is $195 for two, and $30 per each additional guest. In the months of January, February, July and August the rate is reduced to $165 for two, and $30 per each additional guest. ... more   less
