For over 25 years, my husband & I began escaping Houston for weekends in the Hill Country,State art Show & fresh local peaches.
I love having breakfast at the Old German Bakery before a day of shopping or sporting events or even moving our daughter to Austin.
My dad always made German-style pancakes which are rich & thin, not thick & airy like from a box mix. The German pancakes are not supposed to rise but are like a crepe & don't need syrup. Butter & preserves or plain is my way of enjoying. The thin German pancakes are Huge & would hang off the large oalplatter if not folded. Unlike regular pancakes. Thes thin delights are great later cold as leftovers so don't pas up the take out box. Breakfast at the Bakery includes a fresh-baked pieces of breakfast bread (broten) with most egg & suasage plates. Potato pancakes & applesauce alongside his eggs are another favorite with my husband.
While the variety of breakfast offerings are coked to order, peruse & choose your favorite dessert for later. Bear claws, pastry pretzels, nut roses or crisp meringues for the low fat crowd all travel well.
My brother & sister in law from Indiana enjoyed thier second visit to the Old German Bakery, reprising a great visit 15 years ago on Spring Break when their sons were young.
Yes we got fresh peaches & ate them & the pastries after moving our child into a near-campus highrise. I wished we could have eaten again on the way home but they place was geschloss/closed.
