If you grew up in the NYC area, you have memories of going to your local bagel shop, smelling fresh-from-the-oven bagels stacked up in wire bins lined with flattened paper bags. All of the classics were in ample supply: plain, poppy, sesame, garlic, onion, everything, pumpernickel, and most importantly to me -- salt bagels.
Moving to Texas, I had to adjust to what typically passes for a bagel at the franchise bagel places, which is basically a dinner roll with a bit of color on the outside. And making matters worse, you have every possible useless flavor of bagel, except my beloved salt bagel.
Well, stop the presses -- there are, in fact, NYC-authentic bagels in the DFW Metroplex. They are stacked in wire baskets, they are fresh from the oven, they are yummy. And they are at Boopa's Bagel Deli in Fort Worth. And they have salt bagels!
These are bagels straight from my childhood. Just the right level of crust to the exterior, nice texture on the inside. They're not gigantic monster bagels, which is actually a bonus if you like to have more than one bagel in a sitting. The selection of cream cheese spreads are terrific -- don't miss the bacon scallion version! (One bit of advice, sell tubs of whipped butter)
I cannot recommend Boopa's strongly enough. It's become my go-to place on the weekend to take the kids for a sack of bagels. They freeze well, too, so you can have yummy goodness all week. If you go to one of the chain bagel places, treat yourself to bagel enlightenment and make the trip to Boopa's. They have skills that rival the best I've ever had in New York City.
