“Excellent Collection of Western Art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2011

This museum has the best collection of Remingtons and Russells I've seen under one roof. All artfully displayed with enough information about the artists and the pieces so that you get full appreciation for them, but not so much that you are overwhelmed. The staff is very knowledgeable and eager to share their enthusiasm for this art. We did not have enough time to explore all the other collections and special exhibits, but a quick glance made us wish we could come back for an entire day -- and we are not usually art museum goers. If you are even curious at all about American Art, this is the one museum you should take the time to see!

“Wonderful! Don't miss this!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2011

I'm not a fan of western art, so I almost missed this museum. It turns out that western art is probably less than half of what is here. There is an amazing collection of American art here.

“The Best of the Cultural District Art Museums!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2011

I haven't lived in North Texas very long, but I love the Ft. Worth Cultural District and I love the Amon Carter museum. If you don't want to be disappointed by the other art museums then don't start at the Amon Carter first. The museum is free (unlike the pricey modern) and they have a wonderful mix of artwork.

It is a great visit for the whole family, especially on a hot Texas days!

“Excellent Collection of Western Art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2008

The museum started from a collection of Western American art, so it is strongest in F. Remington and Charles Russell, with many paintings and sculptures. They later expanded the mission to all American Art so there is a sprinkling of works in other genres that adds a nice touch of variety. There is also a large exhibit of photography.

Free admission. I took the free highlights tour, and found it very useful. Overall I spent about 3 hours there. It's an easy walk to/from the Kimball Art Museum.

Note that the comment above about the museum being closed this summer seems out of date. No mention is on thier website and exhibitions are scheduled to Jan 2009.

“A Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2008

This museum was such a pleasant discovery for us.
From what I had been told, it is known for its western art ollection.
What amazed me was their collection of American photography. Wow! It's a pretty important collection nationally and they own the estates of several photographer, like, Eliot Porter, Karl Struss and Nell Dorr. It was impressive.
Also, they have an extensive collection of American Art, up to the second World War. O'Keefe, Stuart Davis, Sargent, Homer, Heade, Eakins and Cassatt among others. They even have a Calder mobile!
The gallery attendant said that the collection was started by Amon Carter with western art, but in recent years the museum has become widely known for its photography and American Art.
Don't miss this museum - you'll be sorry!
