“Stupendous Serendipitous Supper”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2014

Positives - Tasty food, upbeat service, competitive prices, smoke-free environment
Negative - Menu doesn't list salad ingredients

Cotton Patch is not a restaurant we patronize often. They're not located in most communities we travel to and when one is available, we chose other restaurants instead. Before this visit, literally ten years had passed since we'd eaten in one of their stores.

If our experience in Denison, Texas is any indication, overlooking Cotton Patch all this time was a mistake!

Not our first choice -

Even in this situation, Cotton Patch was our second choice. We'd gone to another highly-rated restaurant but could smell cigarette smoke at the hostess' booth. Concerned the odor would also be present in the non-smoking dining room, we politely explained why we were leaving and left.

Cotton Patch was fairly close, so we went there instead. We were relieved to see a "no smoking icon" prominently displayed next to the front door.

Good Impressions -

Inside, the restaurant looked like most "country food" eateries: a faux-rustic theme with lots of wood, sheet metal, and retro signage.

We appreciated the well-lighted and well-maintained dining room. The place was packed with customers, even at a relatively late hour. Despite the crowd, we were seated quickly at a table that had just been cleaned. I think it was the only open table in the house.

A server came quickly for our drink order. He encouraged questions about their extensive menu...we were obviously unfamiliar with it...and gave us plenty of time to make decisions.

By the time our drinks arrived we'd selected a couple of entrees. For me, it was a sirloin steak from their grilled selections section. My wife ordered a single grilled pork chop. (Note: the menu lists a "double pork chop" plate, but the lighter version is available upon request.)

On the Side -

We thought it interesting that fewer side options were offered with "grilled selections" than with "traditional (fried) entrees." Customers that order from the grilled menu may select two items, but one must come from "group 1" and the other from "group 2."

Group 1 options were: loaded baked potato, broccoli, or mixed vegetables. Group 2 consisted of house salad, Caesar salad, or a cup of soup.

I chose a house salad and mixed veggies with my steak. My wife selected a house salad and baked potato. We also ordered sauteed mushrooms from the "traditional" sides...for an extra charge, of course!

Great Service, Great Flavor, Great Value -

Service was a strong point during our visit. The hostess was prompt and cheerful, and our server was even more pleasant. He was very attentive and punctual, returning to our table often to ensure everything was in order. Drinks were refilled promptly. When we left, he invited us to come back.

Shortly after we ordered our entrees, he delivered four freshly-baked rolls. They were excellent! Next came the salads, crisp and cold. I don't care for cucumber, so was dismayed to find many chunks mixed into the greens. (Had I known cucumber was standard, I would have asked it to be left off.) I removed every piece, giving some to my wife, placing the remainder into a small bowl.

Aside from this issue, our salads were delicious.

Both main courses were delivered as we finished our salads. I was delighted to find the mixed vegetables had been grilled, not steamed. My sirloin had great color with nice grill marks, but was a little dry. This was due to the leanness of the cut.

Fortunately, juice from our sauteed mushrooms returned a bit of moisture to the meat. In the end, my meal was quite enjoyable.

My wife's pork chop was "just right" as delivered, as was her baked potato. She was extremely satisfied.

The Bottom Line -

Even with all the review tools now available to consumers, finding a restaurant that meets personal preferences can be a challenge. Cotton Patch Cafe in Denison "checked most of our boxes" by providing good food, a pleasant dining experience, and a smoke-free environment...all at a good price.

When in the area again, this restaurant will be a strong contender for our repeat business. Moreover, because of our experience here, we'll consider eating at Cotton Patch Cafe's in other communities we visit.

“Excellent meal, great service, wonderful location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2014

We decided to eat here because it was right across the street from our hotel. We decided to have the house salad, the grilled salmon with vegetables, and the salmon and cesar salad. The food was delicious and our waitress was very sweet. She even sad down and chatted with us for a few minutes. We certainly would eat here again!

“Large portions, great service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2014

Family ate dinner this evening. Full house, we waited about 5 minutes on a table. Our waiter went above and beyond, kept drinks full, removed salad plates when finished. Basket of hot dinner rolls and cornbread included with meal. Husb ordered catfish was "okay" son and I had grilled chicken breast on seasoned rice - very moist, well seasoned, served on rice and 2 side dishes. Dr Pepper chocolate cake and ice cream OMG! so rich and so goood! You definitely get your money's worth here. Will be back next time we are in the area.

“Good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2014

The food here is always good and the portions are large. The service is sometimes sporadic, but ok. Just good home cooking type meals here. Avoid the peach cobbler, no peaches in it! Just crust!
