“Ice Storm Blackout December 2013”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2013

Ok the best thing about this hotel is that its right next door to in and out! lol Ok lets get serious the staff was very nice a little hick up when I checked in but no big deal the room was a nice size the bed was comfy but the sofa was a tad hard and the flat screen tv was kind of fuzzy and hard to look at some times they really need some HD channels. Unfortunately I was there for the ice storm on Dec 5th 1st night of the freezing rain was fine but on Friday Dec 6th about 5pm the hotel lost power the hotel staff was very helpful during this crisis I was hoping when I woke up the next day the power would be back on but it was not (It came back on Dec 7th almost 24 hours later) so I decided to check out a day early and drive back home. I asked about a refund for the night i was not going to stay and also about what they where going to do about Friday night stay since there was no power or heat they said the manager would be calling everyone and discus the refunds i let it go for about 4 days i did not hear from anyone so i called and asked about the refund and found out they would be giving me money back for the night i did not stay and for the night the power went out like i said the hotel staff was grate and helpful during the black out.

As we walked it we were wondering "what have we done?". But were happily surprised once we were checked in... The staff was friendly and always helpful. The room was clean and spacious. It was in a good location for us. IF the city EVER gets through with the road construction, the rating for this hotel will be even better.

We were a bit unsure about staying at the hotel as the exterior doesn't look too great, but the inside and actual room was great! It was very spacious and well maintained. We paid a great price of only $50 and the manager upgraded our room free of charge to the Junior Suite! Very nice. He kept making sure we had everything we needed for our stay and that we were satisfied with our room. We will definitley stay here again!

The hotel itself is right out of a horror movie... dark blue walls and carpeting in the hallway (with chandeliers). It's very fancy but just really dark. I could hear the people talking in the room next to us and every time someone walked down the hallway. This is all to be expected in older hotels but the way I was spoken to by the female desk clerk was ridiculous. The two men that worked after her were very nice and polite and apologetic. she was complaining about another person while waiting on me and when i questioned her about the illegal posting of "doctor's note required for service animal" she said "well this is private property." ALL BUSINESS ARE ON PRIVATE PROPERTY AND YOU CAN'T DISCRIMINATE.

the thing is, they allow pets w/a pet deposit so they're just trying not to get stiffed. i printed out the law and gave it to the night clerk and the sign was removed when i checked out but there's no way to know if it's back up.

I had to go to my car a couple times and the security guard walked me thru the parking lot and even once back to my room, which was incredibly nice of him.

The room was nice, the "double" beds were smaller than they should have been. The room service (delivery) menu was disgusting w/food and splatters of ketchup.

overall, i paid a good price so if it were not for the female clerk's ridiculous behavior, i would have given it a four. it bothered me all night to where i got up at 4am to print out the Americans With Disabilities Act for the manager.

We had an amazing time in The Grand Hotel Dallas, absolutely loved everything about the hotel.

- The staff were very friendly.

- The general manager/owner was very understanding and helpful.

- The room was clean & well maintained.

- The location was 3 minutes walking to the "Coit@Alpha" bus stop where the bus can take you to the rail station then to downtown or you can just take the bus around the neighborhood.

- There are food shops around the hotel (Subway®, McDonalds®, In&Out Burgers®, other taco and burger shops...)

- McDonalds is open 24 hours and In&Out Burgers is open until 1 am, for late arrivals or night snacks.

- CVS Pharmacy right at the bus stop (3 minutes walking from the hotel)

- Walmart neighborhood market (open 24 hours) is right down the street (2 miles, 10 minutes by bus)

We had a bit of a situation so we missed our flight from New York and had to take a later flight arriving at Dallas around midnight. We called the hotel in the morning and they agreed to hold our room until we arrive even if it would be the next morning.

The owner/general manager is a very nice, helpful, and understanding man and it's definitely a plus to have the owner/manager on the premises almost daily. We needed a special favor due to change of plans and he was extremely helpful.

We would stay there next time we come to Dallas for sure and recommend to any one going to Dallas whether for business or pleasure.

I only have few comments for the management to take into consideration to have the perfect hotel :)

- Curtains: The view from the rooms is nice and I like letting daylight into the room but I couldn't keep the curtains open because the whole room was revealed to any one passing in the glass corridor/hallway or even sitting in the garden looking up (1st floor room, garden view). It would be lovely if you can add a second light curtain (chiffon or something like that) so that guests can open the blackout curtain to let the daylight in while having the light curtain closed to have some privacy.

- Payment: we booked via Booking.com using my credit card (which is in foreign currency not US Dollars) with the "Book now pay later" feature. When we came to pay in the hotel they required we use the same credit card we booked with. We wanted to pay cash since we already exchanged our money into dollars so there's no point in paying with the foreign currency credit card then re-exchanging the dollars to pay the credit card company (and lose the exchange rate difference). It would be nicer if they offer cash payment for bookings via Booking.com for us tourists :)

- Water faucet in the shower: You should have instructions on how to open because some people may not know they're supposed to pull the knob out (as tourists we didn't know that and kept trying to turn it left and right with no luck then called the front desk asking about this.) It may be trivial but after 9 hours of being stuck in an airport and a 5-hour flight, shower is very important :D

That's all, no real issues or problems with the hotel.

Attached are photos I took of the room we were staying in (259), the night we arrived.

Room Tip: If you want to let the day light in, choose a room away from the glass hallway. We had the room righ...

After having an auto accident and being unable to get to the hotel from out of state, no matter what (even though the hotel was not full and would not have been able to give to someone else that night) the manager would not cancel the reservation. This was after someone connected with the hotel told us it would be okay, and that they would not charge us....
