Boutique-style hotel but bigger. All the decorating is soothing, with woods and driftwood art, and objects of interest. There are many well-spaced conversation arrangements/nooks throughout the first floor lobby and restaurant areas. Loaner bicycles are readily available for places like the Katy Trail or the White Rock Trail, and it is said that the hotel shuttle will transport you and the bikes to the starting point (we didn't try, but great perk! Next time...)
Oh yes - and citrus-fruit spiked waters and iced teas are always in the lobby to great you, and never seem to run out (bravo to catering staff). Very welcome when you return from the State Fair after the Texas-Oklahoma game when the fans are restless.
In the rooms - very high quality ironed sheets, pillow choices, plenty of big fluffy towels, fantastic pounding water pressure and shower head. (Bathroom door a sliding one that takes a bit of muscle to manuever - WD40 treatment please?) We got the least expensive room ~300 sq feet and it still felt roomy - flows from bedroom to our alcove AND large closet to open-ish bathroom look, so this creates the roomy feel. And 4 corner windows for light, lush fresh clean modern draperies.
Good internet though be sure you sign up as a Kimpton In-touch member to reap the benefit. Decent TV stations, but not great. In an upscale locale like this I'd expect more than the basic TV plan i.e. I couldn't see Bravo silly shows (but fun on vacation) like 4 Weddings. As this place may lend itself to weddings and events, I'm surprised you can't see the wedding shows on TV in your spare time to whet appetite for that spending.
Wine reception daily, gratis, even with hors d'oeuvres and classy nut assortments (including Brazils, Cashew and Macadamias). Exceedingly friendly and capable staff, especially coffee and wine staff, valets, housekeeping (unsolicited: "do you need extra towels?"),internet service, and front desk. Clearly everyone works well and happily as a team.
Really enjoy that this location welcomes well-behaved pets! We did not avail ourselves of the opportunity (left two siameses home), but several guests brought charming canine buddies who were unerringly well-behaved and friendly, adding to the homieness and ambiance.
So much fun to have a couple of other peoples' nice pets to dote on while staying here. They cater to all pet needs, including Ice Water at the front door (is gets hot in Dallas) and pet beds. Yet there is not a hint of untoward animal existence - no fur, no barking.... Kimpton has definitely tapped a vein on the pet-owning market - Smart.
The pool is a really great scene - lots of clean stone and an infinity pool. Neither feels harsh chemically at all - very soft clean water. Long wide pool and hot tub for 6-8. 2nd floor rooftop. Plenty of large yellow beach towels, chairs and a covered club-like aquatic couch area. Drink service up there too if you want.
To be fair, the location is at a major highway intersection and only has $23/daily valet parking - no alternatives though heaven knows we tried. My theory is if it is a car-centric town you should presume free parking or cheaper alternative to valet.
You never hear the noise of the roads, but the in and out to the property can be hazardous. The valets manage the volume very well but I can see this could become a problem during events - the front door is like a postage stamp fitting about 6 cars, and only the approach from the south off 75 or from the west on Mockingbird is reasonable. The approach from the east off Mockingbird requires either an illegal u-turn at 75, or a dicey left turn across Mockingbird through the abutting strip mall. And we were always approaching from the northeast so...
Anyway though, we totally recommend the Palomar - convenient to everything. We got a medium decent rate reserving directly, but I see here some people have gotten much better rates. I wish I knew the trick for that, but meantime we'll still be back even at our medium rate, and will try other Kimpton properties.
